yes it is. the thing to remember about tire size...proper tire size..is rim width! that determins what aspect ratio section width to run. the design rim width for the 245/50r16 is 7.5 and 8.0 for the 255.Originally posted by Adam 2kSS

Why not stay with the 17" rims.... you could argue that the lower sidewall hurts you, but you will be closer to stock, won't be like using 3.37 gears in place of your 3.42's, and you will have a little extra tread width.....
BFG Drag Radials:
275/40-17
-rim 9-11"
-tread 10.2"
-section 11.0"
-diameter 25.7" = stock
255/50-16
-rim 7-9"
-tread 9.7"
-section 10.3"
-diameter 26.1" (0.4" larger than stock)
If you are buying wheels, get some 15" wheels that will fit in the back with minimum alterations to the brake calipers. Then use these, with a big, flexy sidewall:
275/50-15
-rim 7.5-9.5"
-tread 10.0"
-section 11.3"
-diameter 26.1"Fred
