I got a 95 Trans am, when you punch it it goes good through first and second, but at the top of third at about 4 or 5 grand it starts burping and couphing. What is my problem?

Could be any number of things. I suspect it's a fuel issue. What tips it off is that it doesn't do it until toward the high side of third. There is an increasing load on the engine as speed climbs. Without a scanner to read what is happening, I would suggest starting with the easiest and going from there. Change the fuel filter and test the pressure and volume of the pump.
