  • Newbie with a question

Ok, first of all hello everybody, I'm new here so take it easy on me
I got a 98 TA, auto and when is cold outside or the car is cold and I start it, it will idle rough and sometimes if not all, it will stall, after it warms up everything's fine. What do you people think?
    Has anybody experienced this before?
    Thanks!!
Oh yeah, what motor do I have, LS1 or LT1? Sorry I know that's a dumb question, but I'm new to these cars

    LS1.

IAC (Idle Air Circuit) I have seen this on all types of cars. For some reason they get carbon in them and die. I have taken them apart and cleaned them and they have worked fine for years. I just had one last a month after cleaning and die again.

      Welcome!!

Your 98 T/A has the 346 cubic inch, all aluminum LS1 engine.

Not sure about the rough idle.... SES light on? Blinking? .... that is a sign of misfire detection.

I know on my 2001 Silverado with the 4.8L LS1-derived engine, the idle seems a little rough at times. I put AutoTap on it, and there were no misfires. It seems like they are trying to control the idle by playing with the spark timing, and thats what feels like a misfire, but isn't. Not sure how that compares to the car engines.... the truck has the "fly-by-wire" throttle, so it might respond a little differently than the F-Body LS1 with its traditional throttle cable.

So I got an LS1? kool!!
No, the SES light doesn't come on, I guess I'm gonna have to take the IAC off the car and clean it. Is that a good idea?
        Thanks for the responses

I have a friend that works at a dealership and they do it all the time. They have a code just for it. I use Auto Zone carb cleaner. Man that's good stuff. Also spray it in the throttle body where the IAC goes.

I remove mine and clean it as part of the tune up process every spring. it's a piece of cake.

Ok, I guess I'm gonna clean the IAC and I'll post back to let you all know what happened. Oh, I almost forgot, will I need any gaskets or anything besides the cleaner, can I reuse the same gasket?

I've allways re-used the old one when there is a paper one but if LS1 is the same as the LT1 there isn't one. There is an O ring on it. http://shbox.com/1/iac3.jpg
