  • Power Window Problems...

Okay when I got my car in September of last year, I have had my driver side window go down easily and come back up really slow and then it stops and then about a few minutes later I can send it back up to the top. Lately though, my Camaro's driver side window goes down and stops about 1 inch down to the bottom. Then when I need to send it back up, it goes up about 3 inches and then stops and then about 2 minutes later goes up to within 1/2 inch from making a complete seal, it stops again. Then about a minute later, it will go all the way up.

I was wondering if anyone has had any problems like that and what might be required to fix it? What is the cost and what might be wrong?

Because I am really worried about it...

    Thanks...

Welcome to the wonderful world of F-body window motors!

It's going. Replace it. For a do-it-yourself go to www.shbox.com

The motor is riveted in and you'll have to drill it out. I don't have personal experience doing the job. Both of mine have been replaced, one of them was under warrenty.

I think the motor runs about $180. It's been a while though. With labor it comes to about $300.

It's enough to look into doing it on your own. In retrospect, I probably should have at least made an attempt on it.

The motor is about $70 from a local auto parts store.

BTW this is assuming you have a 93-02 f-body. You didn't say.

Steve 93Z and I did the one on his Z. From gmpartsdirect, it costed $68 + shipping. We did it a few months ago, but guess what...it stopped working on Saturday. So we pull the motor out and find out that it's shot. The gear somehow came unaligned and everytime you use it, it would sort of "wobble." Nevertheless, he took the part straight to a local dealer, and they gave a replacement, no charge.

The only thing is...when you change the motor, you're gonna have to drill a couple of holes in order to get the old screws out. Don't forget to hold your window up with a big clamp or else it will drop when you remove the motor!
                  Good luck.

Joe wasn't off... I called one of my local dealers that I trust and they said the same thing, it would cost about 180 dollars for the part and about 125 for the labor and that that would total to about 305 dollars...

Oh... and Jeff I don't think I would trust one of my local autopart stores because... I just got my muffler system put on, right. Well, while I was an old lady with a Mustang had brought rotors and pads from a local auto zone and they were putting them on for her and once they where finished, her wheels wouldn't roll one bit. So I am a little worry of my local auto part stores.

I was refering to just buying the part from them not having them install it. I bought mine from AutoZone and it has worked for 2 years now.

Sorry but I was talking about her buying the part from auto zone and going to a place like meinke or however you spell it to have them installed.

Sorry that I wasn't more clear...

Any part from any source can fail at any time. At least if you do the work yourself, you have a greater sense of accomplishment and your wallet will be a little fatter too. Working on these cars is not hard. Get yourself a Haynes manual or something equivilent and have at it.

I paid $40 each for my window motors at O'Reilly's Auto Parts and they have worked fine for 2 years now. I just drilled the rivets and used a simple hex bolt and nut to replace the motor. It really helps to remove the lower speaker.
