  • What series carrier?

My car was told it has a 3.23 in it, but not totally sure, i want to go with 3.73. But Summit says 3.23 and higher is series 2 and 3.08 and lower is series 3. How can you tell for sure? With my car?

    no....3:23 IS 3 series......and 2:73 is 2 series.

what do you mean by "my car was told it has a 3:23 in it"???????????? where did the info come from and who "told your car" the option codes listed in the glove box will show it...or where ever the sticker is .

Like Ken said, just the opposite!

3.xx:1 is 3 series and has a thinner ring gear

2.xx:1 is 2 series and has a thick ring gear

Well actually: 3.08:1 and numerically lower is a Series 2 carrier. 3.23:1 and numerically higher is a Series 3 Carrier. If Im not mistaken, F-Body's didnt come with the 3.08 rear end. Those are commonly found on early Impala SS' like the 96 and 95 models. Unless you have a GU2 code on your door/glove box, its going to be a Series 3 carrier.

          Manuals came with 3.42s......
Autos came with 2.73 or 3.23 with the performance axle option. One quick way to tell is check your auto shifter. If you can put the shifter all the way down in to 1st gear, you should have a 3.23 2.73 gears did not have a manually selectable 1st gear unless someone has modified it. That may help somewhat.

My 98 Z with an A4 came from the dealer with the ability to shift into 1st, but has the GU2 options code on the drivers door. I was having noise problems with the rear end while she was still under warrenty, and once when I took it in, they said they were going to "upgrade" the gears. At WOT the 1-2 shift happens at 46-47 mph. I was looking at one of the gear calculators that was linked to in another thread, and it indicated that 3.23's would get up to 46 mph in 1st, 2.73's would do 50+. I know I can lift the back of the car and count driveshaft revs per wheels revs to figure it out for sure, but I wanted to see if you guys thought this would be something the dealer would do. Also (keep in mind that I am a newbie) what does this mean for me as far as series when move up to 3.73's?

                Thanks!

In order for the dealer to "upgrade" the gears, they would also have to reprogram the speedometer as well. You could always jack up the rear and count driveshaft revolutions, that's a quick way to tell. Somehow, I doubt that the dealer is going to change out 2.73 for 3.23. Not saying it isn't possible, just highly unlikely.

i was thinking about getting 3.73's and i was wondering if seeing that i have a series 3 carrier that the ring gear is already smaller, when i upgrade i have heard that the gear is more likely to break because of the smaller thickness is this true?

I haven't seen anything that would make a 2 series stronger than a 3 series in our rather smallish rears. Remember, these are the same rear as found in the S10, they are not the heavier duty corporate 10 or 12 bolt from years ago. Those had thicker cases, beefier internals and held up pretty well. All I've seen is that automatics tend to be easier on the rear, some examples hitting high tens and low 11s without failure. I've also seen stick cars that were basically stock and they broke the rear. 3.73s will wake the car up nicely and with an automatic, it should last.
