  • rear end ready for the welder

I finished the torque arm bracket today. It took some time and some thinking, but it will work good. It bolts on. No welding to the pumpkin (cast iron). The rear is finally ready to be professionally welded. I am taking it to a specialty shop on monday. They are going to weld up my brackets, and make sure the housing ends are welded straight. Slicks and skinnies here I come!

Oh, by the way, thats 6" c-channel thats been milled on the top and bottom to 5.850 - its fits the torque arm perfect!

I assume you ARE going to use an adjustable torque arm......

I made the bracket to fit the stock torque arm - the pinion angle is set the same. So, I am going to bolt it up with the stock T.A. and measure my pinion angle again - If it needs adjustment, then I will go with an adjustable T.A.

It may not look like much now, but its a work in progress. I will post some picks when its all finished.

Does anyone know of any good (inexpensive) adjustable T.A.'s and panhard bars??

Just want to let you guys know youre the reason for the second mortgage on the house. (just kidding) Today I ordered a BMR adjustable torque arm and a lakewood adjustable panhard bar. I also ordered the set of Centerline Telstar 13's. Im getting pretty excited about getting all of this done! Does anyone know how much abuse the stock WS6 driveshaft will take???

LOL! You'll be happy with the BMR stuff. That torque arm is a pretty stout piece. Funny thing it looks strangely similar to the SLP severe duty torque arm. From what I saw, the only difference is where it says "BMR", the SLP says "SLP". I could almost swear that BMR makes it for SLP. As far as the stock driveshaft, I wouldn't run it period. The reason is that it reaches critical speed at a lower speed than the car's top speed. This condition is marginal with stock gearing. By changing gears, the driveshaft rotates much faster, reaching critical speed pretty close to what you are running in the quarter. That shaft is just to fly apart already. IMHO, get a good driveshaft with HD U joints. The car will run with less vibration, if the new shaft has a lower MOI, you'll even pick up some horses. That was the idea with the factory 1LE aluminum shaft. Higher critical speed, less mass, less vibration and a HP boost to boot. I kinda like the LPE 3.5" but that's a few bucks there.

Hey N20LT4Bird, you can pick up a Strange mig-welded, chrome-moly DS with 1350 Spicer HD weld yokes, and 1350 Spicer HD u-joints for $198.

With the addition of a 1350, 27 spline tranny yoke for $54.73, you are only looking at a total of $252.73. There are of course upgrades from this combo, but I think this would be sufficent in your case.

Pretty cheap for a good DS!

Joe, if I keep talking to you, I will be living out of my car, because that will be all that I can afford to own!

I think my driveshaft IS aluminum. Does that make it the 1LE piece? If so, will that take a little more punishment than the standard shaft?

The 1LE aluminum DS is only .25" larger in diameter than your factory steel DS. 2.5" vs 2.75". Yes it would be lighter but not much more in the way of stength.

Just an idea, but if you are looking to save money, the factory LS1's came with a 3" diameter aluminum DS and has the vibration problem fixed. You could probably find one of these cheap in a junkyard.

But if you want quality, chrome-oly is lighter and stronger than aluminum, and Strange makes very high quality products.

For 250 bones you can't beat the Strange deal!
