  • Received my new 383 stroker today ...some questions/problems

I removed it from the crate and it looked clean and well packaged. When I looked at the cylinders one of them had some dicoloration and very small pit in it with and what looks like a hair line from each side of the pit. Also when I checked the bore it measured .55-.60 more than my stock block. I have never built a racing engine before so I am uncertain if I should put it back together and install it in the car. The guy from Golen Racing engines said he has built 550 383s and there has been very few problems. It just does not look right to me.

I also purchased lt4 heads for it and will reuse my lt4 hot cam.

If the engine is .60 over will that change all the other assumptions
ie computer set up, cam choice ETC.

Thanks for any help, direction or suggestions you can give me.

I am assuming you meant 0.060" over the stock 4.000" cylinder bore. Because if it were really a 4.600" cylinder bore and assuming you are using a 3.75" stroke crankshaft, you would be displacing 498.57 cubes!!

So if your cylinder bores truly measure 4.060" and you're using a 3.75 crank, then your displacement would be 388.39 cubes.

It sounds like this block has been honed a few times. How are you measuring the cylinder bore?

Maybe they bored into a small void or nugget in the metal. Hopefully there is plenty of metal left in the bore - I'm not sure about 60 over. You might want to take a close-up and send it to the guy who built it or post it and get some opinions before putting it together. hopefully those hairlines are just a stain and not a crack. The other alternative would be to get a second opinion of a local engine builder. He could magnaflux it for ya.

If there is a pit in the cylinder wall however small, absolutely do not assemble this motor. Like Kevin said, see if you can post some pics. I would be interested to see this.
