  • KEYLESS ENTRY

I JUST BOUGHT MY RED 99SS FROM A LOCAL NON-CHEVY DEALER AND DIDNT COME WITH REMOTE. IM TRYING TO USE MY GIRLFRIENDS OLD REMOTE FROM A CAMARO SHE NO LONGER HAS.IS THERE ANY WAY TO AVOID PAYING THE DEALER TO DO IT?

The dealership I talked to said they would program a junkyard one for $45. Best Buy has a Remote Starting Kit for $120 that comes with two remote key fobs. If I ever loose my last keyless entry fob I'll probably do this.

I'm not sure how the new keyless systems work, but with the '93-'95 systems, you could connect a jumper wire to certain pins in your diagnostic port (under the steering column). To be safe, you could have a fuse in the middle of the wire. This would put the system into program mode, so all you would need to do is press the lock button on the remote and the system would read the frequency. All I know is that the '93-'95 remotes work completely different than the '96-'99 ones. I actually bought one on ebay, tried to program it on mine, but it didn't work.
Try reading the manual to see if you have the option of putting the receiver into program mode.

Pull the radio fuse, turn the key off and on 3 times within 5 seconds, leave on and push lock and unlock buttons at same time. It will cycle lock functions. Turn key off and replace radio fuse.
Ive tried several other GM remotes on my 97.
        I have another 97(GTP) a 96 and an 01.
None of them would work on the 97 Bird.
Get one from ebay for about $10.
