HT Power Scanner

Can anyone tell me the proper procedure for scanning the engine while it's running with a Hypertech Power Scanner? My friend who I borrowed it from is out of town and I don't have instructions.

My guess is:
1. Plug it into port.
2. Start the car and turn on scanner.

It could be I need to turn the scanner on and then start the car.

Needless to say I don't want to screw up my friends scanner or my PCM.

Better to be safe then sorry.......
