  • 2000 Camaro: How to disassemble centre console?

    Hi,

I would like to get the centre console of my 2000 Camaro coated, so I need to remove it. I found the screws in the glove compartment, but how do I remove the shifter of the automatic trans?

BTW: Any tricks how to remove the radio bezel and A/C bezels?

    Thanks

    Horst

unscrew the screws in the ash trays and there are a set of screws under the coin holder...remove the holder by lifting it up and it'll reveal two screws under it...unscrew those and use a flat head screw driver to remove a pin behind the shifter...it's easier to remove if your place the shifter in 1st. the console should pop right out with a little of wiggling.

for manuals i know their ony 5 screws you need to unscrew, the 2 in the compartment, one hidden under teh ashtray, and 2 at the end where your feet are (one on each side. when yo get all these screws out take off the shiftknob and the boot and lift the parking break so its vertical and it come right off. dont forget teh ciggarte lighters and ashtray light. i dont know about autos though.

The pin is not easy to find if you have never seen it before.

It is actually more like a staple shape piece of wire. It is located on the front side of the shift knob. You will see a little slot horizontally in it. The clip is in there, just use a screwdriver to pry it out. Now pull strait up on the knob, it will slide right off the stick.

          Location of pin

          O.K.

As I understand you,the pin is located in the shifterknob, not underneath the console, right? So I can take of the knob from the rod, and not pull it out alltogether.

          Thanks.

If you look on the front of the base of the gear selector handle you will see a small slot (approx 3/4"). This is the pin that can be removed with a small flathead screwdriver. Then the handle will slide straight up.

There are two plastic keyways in between the handle and the selector shaft. Try to keep them for later reinstallation.

              Sorry for being so stupid....

              Sorry for being so stupid....

... I still don´t get it. Is the pin part of the shifter knob, on top of the rod, right underneath the knob itself. If so - I can´t find it.

Or is it on the base of the shifter rod, underneath the console itself, so that I actually have tó unscrew the console first, the lift it up a bit, and finally find the pin underneath?

              Thanks

no no no...the pin is shaped like a staple...a big staple. It's right behind the knob...use a screw driver to pry it out and the knob will slide right out. happy hunting...

A picture is worth 1000 words... Here are the shifters in my Blazer and Buick.

stick a screwdriver behind the staple pin and pull it out. Then pull strait up on the shifter.

                    Thanks for your patience.

Somehow the shifter in my car looks completely different:

Take a picture of your shifter from the *front*. You will see the staple pin. You are looking at it from the back, and that is not going to help you.

Both my pictures are taken from in front of the shifter. The shifters may be shaped differently, but the slot with the staple pin is the same on all GM automatic shifters.

Horst, when we are saying the "front", we mean the side of your shifter that is facing the dash.
                        You can't miss it buddy!
