  • my A/C is no more.

I bought my 98 TA in march, my A/C stopped working once I started using it regularly. My 3mo warranty is out and I was wondering if anyone could guide me to a fix.
It slowly leaks freon, not sure from where. If I add a can it holds it for a while then the more I use the system the quicker it goes away.
If I was to use some fo the UV leak finder stuff and locate the leak my self, would i have a chance at being able to fix it myself? I have a pretty good mechanical knowledge, this is my 9th car and I am almost 21, so I have done a lot of repair work. But I have never touched an A/C system, they have all worked on my past cars- except for my 79 vette, but it didnt need A/C.
I am concerned about cost, because this repair will come from my mod fund. I just really need to know if I should try to do it myself or take it to my dad's friend's Goodyear repair shop and have them fix it for 1/2price labor?

    Any tips or suggestions welcome

Take it to a reputable shop in your area. They'll be able to test, repair, recycle, and recharge it for you (and save you some time, too).

A/C systems aren't that hard to work on if you have the tools. A vacuum pump, assorted fitting tools are all you need. Evacuating the contents should be done by a certified recovery station, but other than that, it's a piece of cake. For the moment, you can pick up a set of R134a gauges and leak sealer. It will seal a leak if it isn't too bad and contains some refridgerant. You may even have to top it off with a little more 134a. I've done that before and gotten many more years of service before having to replace hoses.
