  • fixed the trany, blew up the engine

I just finished rebuilding the transmission, it was awsome, so after being under the knife for 2 months, I decided it needed a wash and some fresh wax, I spent 2 hours detailing the thing, took it out and the motor was making this ticking.....the starter is going out, and I think the alternater as well, cause it just dies every once in a while. well coming of the freeway, it died, I clutch started it,(it wouldn't start on its own) and the ticking turned from anoying to a teeth grinding chatter. either one of the connecting rod bearings blew or a crank bearing went. so now I have to rebuild the engine.

would it be cheaper to find a rebuilt 305 shortblock, or cheaper to just rebuild the old one.

Ebay doesn't have anything to offer, where do I find a short block for under $300? local machine shop?

    82 z28 w/ 305 (for now) 4 speed saginaw

The Z28 is back under the knife, after the transmission, now its the entire engine....will post pics when all finished.

one more thing to add....I have seen headers that bolt to a 305 or a 350, do both of the blocks have all the same bolt patterns? what if I used a 327 shortblock, or a 350 shortblock? or would the heads **** it up cause it isn't getting enough fuel and air? or would it even bolt up? it seems infeisable, but I thought I'd ask.

Your profanity is going to get you in trouble.

I wouldnt waste any time on a 305.

Start looking for a good rebuilt 350 longblock. All your stuff will bolt right up to it as long as you get centerbolt heads. You might need to get a new program for the PCM.

I'm asuming you have a 87 or newer 3rd gen.

If you are feeling gutsy, call a camaro salvage yard and get a low mile LT1 for it.

sorry, it's an 82 3rd gen z28 with a carbed 305, I think. here is something that seems a little odd to me. I got it and the guy said it was "all stock". and the engine has never been rebuilt with 137K. but the stock z28 for 82 only came with an emaressing 145bhp. this does not have 145hp. if it was that low, i wouldn't keep up with some of the cars that I do. my buddy has a stang thats running about 300 and its just barelly quicker than me... and the camaro is heavier. is there any easy way to tell if it IS a 350?

ahh yes..the infamous LG4, worked like a horse, more of a truck engine than a performance engine. My 84 TA used to shoot out all kinds of trouble codes and still ran. haha Anyway, the stock LG4 had a compputer controlled carb. so you should see all kinds of wires coming and out of it, and plenty of vaccum tubes on that engine, and I believe the original color of the block was blue.

Also I want to add that my 305 bearly kept up with my friends 1995 5 speed neaon RT. So I doubt you have the original LG4 in there.
