  • how much power can my stock trany take

    hi
i hear that my stock trany cant take any more than about 370hp

i have a 1994 trans am with the performance rear end pack with 323 gears

i wanna know if my trany could take some 373 gears and some basic performance upgrades to get to about 350 hp
and still be able to daily drive it

I'm thinking you have an A4 - you should be OK if it is healthy - but your car is 10 years old and there might be some wear. If you put a cooler and a deep pan, and a good shift kit, you will help it live. Next time, give more info - don't make us guess.

From personal experience, 350 HP is borderline, depending on what kind of torque youre making. I had a 700R4 (internally similiar to your 4L60E) The car (88 Formula) was making about 300 horse on the motor and then another 150 shot of N2O on top and I used to rebuild the tranny once a year. It would take the abuse for a while, but eventually give up the ghost. It didnt matter to me much though as my father owns a tranny shop and rebuilding it would only cost me about 75 bucks and 3-4 hours. It had a basic shift kit too.

My current car had a 4L60E in it and it lasted me about a month at the 400+ HP level and then crapped out; I swapped to the T56.

Within one month of my 233/239 cam install with stock ported heads I torched the 3-4 clutch in my 4L60E. Was making approx 430 RWHP. The 3-4 clutch and the reaction shell (commonly called sun gear) are the 2 weak points in a 4L60E.

I constantly smoked the 3-4 clutches in mine. We put extra clutches in the drum, and it helped a bit, but at that power level, its only a matter of time before theyre wiped.

Now, dont get me wrong. You can really build a 4L60E to handle some good power, but its gonna cost you some $$$$. I thought the T56 was the way to go, for the money. Or you could go TH400, but lose the overdrive.
