  • LT1 rearend strength

I have the stock 10 bolt rear end in my 96 T/A. I dont have the performace axles because I had the 2.73 gears stock. Now I have 3.73 gears and contemplating putting a 2800 stall in. My question is weather the rearend and axles will hold up fine with the power going to them. I will also have a hot cam kit soon so would the rearend still hold up with that?
    thanks

All axles from the factory are the same. The performance rear option substituted a 3.23 gear in place of a 2.73 on automatic transmission cars. That's the only difference. As far as strength, auto transmissions are more forgiving than manual transmissions on the rear end. Many guys are running low 11s with automatics and they hold together yet many stock M6s are breaking the rear.

WHat youre running for tires is a big factor too. I was running into the low 12's with drag radials, M6 and about 500 HP. The stock 10 bolt was holding together. I am moving on to slicks now, so the 10 bolt has gotta go.

        ...what strength?

I don't think I would be inclined to launch at 2800/3000 on a 7.5 rear with slicks or drag radials too often. I wouldn't put too much faith in that!

I've got 3.42 gears behind a ~2800 stall convertor (basically stock motor) and haven't seen anything break or wear out other than tires

Like said before...... the stock 10 bolt is a simply a gamble. Most of of the time you will lose.......but sometimes you will win.
