  • Ok, 2 Short Questions......

1). What effects would show if you had a leaking intake manifold gasket ?

2). What all effects would you see if you had a shot catalytic converter ?

Thanks in advance for all replies !!!

Not sure about the intake manifold gasket, but if your cat is shot, you may hear the honeycombs inside rattling around. If its really bad, the car will idle rough and your O2 sensor may send some error messages. A noticeable decrease in power will probably be apparent too...

Once the honeycombs break down, they may end up goin into your muffler. The debris causes the same flow problems in the muffler too.. Loss of power, it won't sound as good...

it can get bad enough fir the oxygen sensors to blow out of place! bad gas mileage

There are several ways an intake manifold could leak. first, the actual engine vacuum from a leaking runner which will have a symptom of poor vacuum and or rough running, then an oil leak which can be leaking either out between the manifold and the block or even into an intake runner causing oil consumption which would be visible in either case. Some intake manifolds have heat crossover provisions which could also leak exhaust gasses that you would hear. Then there is a possible leak of the egr as well.

A plugged cat would rapidly cause the exhaust system prior to the cat to becomse superheated, often glowing red hot exhaust manifolds. If the guts are breaking down, they often rattle around sounding like the exhaust is loose. My Vette spit glowing chunks of the inside honeycomb type material out the exhaust in a rather spectacular fashion when my optispark went haywire. Awesome sight. Good thing it was under warranty too.

would the bad cat. converter mess with the temperature at all ?
