I have a A4 in the T/A right now. The trans is completely shot. I was thinking about converting it to a 6 speed but I wasnt to sure if it wouild be worth it or not. The car will be a 11 second car when Im done with it eventually. So I dont know if a 6 speed would be ok with that. Can someone help me out on price and if its worth it, and what kinda trans to get for a 6 speed.

The 6 speed is strong enough, but inconsistant. SO its a matter of wat you use the car for.96 WS6 Formula: Ram Air, 383 Stroker, Ported LT4 Heads and Manifold, 1.6 Crane Rollers, 58MM T.B., AS&M Headers, Borla Exhaust, Meziere Elec. If overdrive is that much of an issue, then you can get a TH400 with a Gear Vendors Overdrive unit...or just get a 4L80
I disagree about the 6spds strength...they are no where near as reliable and strong as a TH400 or 4L80 transmission. Not to mention the cost of clutches alone would be enough a reason to swap to a auto trannie.

Don't forget that the 4L60E can be built to withstand well more than 900 horsepower.
The 4L80E is really intended to be a reliable towing tranny.....it soaks up mucho horspower.
The T-56 is indeed pretty strong but I would also go with an auto for consistency.
Combination Motorsports has had a Stage 3 4l60E for an enitre season behind a 1000 horse/1,000 lb/ft, 4,500lb Impala w/o any problems.

But as Fast TA said, you can build a pretty stout 4L60E too, but its gonna cost you. I have put a moderate amount of cash into a few automatics and have not been able to make them hold up for more than a year or so.
I chose the T56 because it is strong enough for some dragstrip abuse (with a good clutch) and it allows me to get 23 mpg on the highway at 80 mph with the A/C blasting. Plus its fun!
You guys are right about the consistancy - unless your really good (and im not) the T56 is inconsistant at the strip.
So, it all comes back to what you built the car for. Is it a serious bracket racer or is it a driver that you take to the track for the occasional mustang tromping?96 WS6 Formula: Ram Air, 383 Stroker, Ported LT4 Heads and Manifold, 1.6 Crane Rollers, 58MM T.B., AS&M Headers, Borla Exhaust, Meziere Elec. I want to build up my T/A and have the 6 spd already. Can i build up my tranny to hold up to about 400-500 rwhp or can it hold this stock?? I do not race my car at the track but want my car to have serious power. One thing i love about my car is the 6 spd tranny and i hate driving auto's. Sorry about hijacking your thread Purepwr.1997 6-spd WS6 Trans Am

wait a minute....
i dont want to start an argument over anything, and being new to the board; maybe i dont know much. But when is the last time any of you guys saw a track race where automatics were the dominant winners. I dont know anything about drag racing-i'll admit that, but around the track-the manual has got to be the reigning king.
...just my two cents.
