  • NFB: remember my thread about the guy who was leaning on my GTO...

Well, some of you may remember the thread, if not, the link is down below. Its about some moron who was leaning on my GTO at a cruise night last summer.....

Well, the funniest thing.......I was sitting around talking to some of my students today about some of the cruise nights last summer. A lot of my students have classic cars and hang at the local cruise nights. Well, one of them saw me yelling at the guy who was leaning on my car......he figured i knew at the time, but he told me today that it was Brock Yates. I said "who?". So he told me - Apparently I was yelling at an automotive journalism legend.....he writes for Car and DRiver and had written a bunch of famous car movies like the Cannon Ball run. I didnt believe it, but I searched google for "Brock Yates" and under images; I saw a picture of the guy and sure enough....it was him.

My opinion of him does not differ, hes still a moron. But I thought that was funny!

Yates is the kind of guy who uses cars and loves driving them and talking about,he is not a Classic Car Cleanliness addict kind of guy.

I have often seen him leaning on a Ferrari or a 427 Cobra wearing jeans,it's just Yates, that's how he is,a gearhead to the bone!!!

Brock Yates has an editorial column every month in Car and Driver, and if you read some of them, you'll get the impression (at least I do) that for him, a car is to be used and abused, it's all about the engine, and the driving experience. Cars are not to be babied and fussed over, they're to be driven. Even if he does think that way though, that still doesn't mean he shouldn't show respect to other people's property.

You know, its sooo funny. Thats the exact response he gave me when I asked him not to lean. I told him if thats what he thinks, lean on his own car!

Brock, shmock. If you don't want anyone leaning on your car, it does not matter who it is. Respect for other people's property is what it boils down to. I don't hold the guy in high regard just because he has written for some car rags. In fact, I probably have less regard for him now, since you brought this up.

I never said I held him in high regard nor did anyone else,I stated that he has a bad habit of leaning on cars because to him looks are not what counts,it's what the car will do.

It lacks class to lean on a car [specially someone elses]but he was never accused of being high class has he.

You should have asked him why his magazine can't put up good times in any of the cars they drive.

I HATE the big 3 (magazines, that is). MotorTrend, Car and Driver, and Road and Track are all useless if you want to read accurate statistics, with unbiased critiques.

Damn, I wish Brock Yates would lean on my car. I read his Cannonball book and now he is my hero. haha. You should read it if you havent already.

"Why are there speed laws? Standard answer: To promote safety. If we were being unsafe at 120 miles per hour--in a machine that is so eminently safe that I cannot express it to anyone who has not driven a Ferrari Daytona, then what about the patrolman careening along at 140 mph, in his gussied-up four door? Was he not compounding the hazard, if we accept the argument that our speed was automatically unsafe?"

I am sure somebody like him doesn't have to scrape up pennies to make their car nice...what a turd. I remember when you posted that; I was pretty darn annoyed. I hate taking my '79 WS6 to car shows or anywhere else for that reason. If I want to scratch-up and dent a car, I will take the Blazer 4wheeling! The proper edicate is too look with both hands behind your back...I do that in parking lots as well. It is called respect for other's property...some of us have to slave away to buy or build something nice so we want to keep it that way because we can't afford to do it twice. It doesn't seem like too difficult of a concept to comprehend.

If Big Daddy leaned on my car, I'd just tell my friends -

"See that scratch? Big Daddy did that!" and they'd say "Whoa!"

If I said "Brock Yates made that scratch." They'd say "Did you kick his ass?"

We're in complete agreement friend...in fact if I were this Mr. Brock I would consider myself lucky that the infraction was done to N20LT4Bird's car whom of course handled the situation with perfect success and tact.

I'm a bit more of a brute in those regards and lets say my tactfullness would have been in question, but the message would have definately been recieved.

Kudos to you N20LT4Bird...you were able to keep things in check and still convey your feelings of displeasure...My reaction on the other hand...well thats another matter.
