  • Best Performing 275-40-17" Street tires for the $$$.

Hello, just once I would like to get some tires for my 1995 z28 that work well. I have had goodyear and pirelli tires and nothing will hook up. It is impossible to ease out in first gear and floor it without lighting up the tires. What do you guys think are really good street tires that are affordable and last. Im not interested in them holding up doing burnouts, I just want them to hook up. The size I run is 275-40-17" in 17"x10" wheels.

Also are the Falken tires that are always on ebay any good or do they suck too.

    Thanx
    Bill

I use the same size tires and I have had michelin pilots, kuhmo ecsta 712's, and goodyear eagle f1 gd-d3's so far. i must say that the goodyear eagle f1's are by far the best tire i have ever had on my car and will not put anything else on it unless they stop making them. They cost me $180 a tire on tirerack.com and about $50 to ship em. I had them installed for free at my uncles shop so i don't know how much mounting will cost.

I am pretty sure that everyone else will tell you that the Firestone firehawks are the best and i used to think so too. But i have a friend with a 97 SS and i have a 97 ws6 so they are basically the identical power output. We both have 6 spd's and he has firehawks and i have eagle f1 gs-d3's and i get more traction than he does. I have driven both cars to make sure that it wasn't all my driving and my car definately hooks more than his.

With every tire i have owned i have been able to get at least a half of a tire spin out of slamming second gear in my car but with the eagle f1's i only get a chirp. I am not saying the firehawks aren't a good tire because they are an awesome tire(better than the michelins and kuhmos by far). But i went out on a limb to buy the eagle f1's instead of firehawks and i am more than satisfied. They are the only tire i have ever had that actually gives me grip in the rain!!!! The only downside i believe is that the firehawks may have a higher treadwear.

I believe that $190 a tire is a steal for these tires!! But if you are looking to save some $ kuhmos are usually pretty cheap but they don't last long. Just my two cents. As far as the falkens go i have no clue.

Here is a link to the eagle f1's

I have Eagls GSCs and they are awful about lighting them up. I have to pedel it when it's dry to keep them planted. Forget punching it when it's wet.

I ran Toyo Proxes on my car until they were gone, and they never failed me at the track one time (except when I launched on the bottle ). Awesome tire.

When the 275's were worn down, I switched to a 17X11 in the rear and went with a Sumitomo tire. The hardest I have ever hit those tires is a 4500 drop at the track on a 6 speed car and the car bogged because the tires hooked. The tires are that good. I warm them up just the slightest bit, and they hook every time.

Now if you're talking about running your car on the street, good luck. You're going to have to go with a drag radial, and they don't last long and have zero wet weather traction. If you need some mileage yet still be able to hook up, go with a Nitto. If all you care about is stickiness, go with BFG's.

I prefer Kumho Ecsta 712's myself. Very inexpensive compared to other tires of their quality. I put on a set of 245/40R18's on my Fiero GT and I am VERY impressed with their wet and dry adhesion to the road. They were only about $110 each and I think they are v rated.

Falken, Cooper, Kumho are all mileage and value in their approach. The higher dollar stuff like the SZ50EPs, KD, KDW, etc.. are the "performance" tires. And they do perform differently!
