  • Door locks

I've had a 94' Trans Am for a while. It has python security/automatic entry. When I got it, it all works fine. Then one day, I pressed the unlock button (one button on remote locks (and arms security) and press it again and it unlocks (and disarms security)). Now when I press it, it will lock, but when I press again, I hear the mechanism work, but it won't unlock the car. I can unlock from inside, but automatic unlock from outside does not work (even though I hear the sound inside likes its unlocking!). Any ideas?

Also, don't know if the problem is related but.... My dad has a 2001 Grand Pri. Now, when you press unlock button from inside, the back door will not unlock with it, it has to be done manually from inside. I can hear the mechanism working in the door when I press unlock, but it doesnt unlock from the outside, won't open at all from outside.

    Any suggestions would be great!

    Does the passenger door unlock?
Do the power switches inside unlock it ok? I bet they do.

It sounds like the solenoid is getting weak and the pulse from the alarm is not long enough anymore to fully unlock it.

You can hold down the switch inside the car longer, and it works fine, right?

I'd try lubrication the solenoid and the latch mechanism.

If I use the indoor automatic lock it works fine. With the remote it will lock both doors, but won't unlock either.

I listened again today, and I don't hear it attempting to unlock when I press the unlock button. Btw, I already tried replacing batteries in remote.

It is 1 of 2 things then...

          1) the wire the goes from the alarm to the unlock wire of the car has been comprimised

          2) your alarm has gone south. (kaputski)

Follow the unlock wire from the alarm and see if it properly connected.

My lights quit working on mine a few months ago. I traced it down and the problem turned out to be one of those quick clip (I don't know what the official name of it is) connectors. It's the type that you wrap around the wire and squeeze and this metal piece is supposed to cut through the insulation and make contact with the wire. Then you can plug a flat (I call a spade) connector into it. Well that metal piece doesn't do a good job cutting the insulation and it will quit working. I took the connector off, took an exacta knife and carefully cut the insulation all the way around the wire. I then slid the insulation apart and put the metal thing around the wire. I then put the plastic piece around it and closed it. Fixed. Installers use these things all the time and this isn't the first one I've had fail on me. I'd suggest looking for these and redoing them like I did.
