also, why would you want to do that?

If you leave your fans on all the time, it will take a whole lot longer for the engine to reach closed loop. You will also have a much shorter fan motor life, just so you know. If I were you I would just rig up a switch to turn the fans on when you want to instead of all the time. That is what I have done and it is pretty easy.

        cooling fan switch

does anybody here know where I can get a coolant fan switch for my 87 RS that comes on at like 180-200 degrees? My motor is down and I found out my heads are cracked. Right now the fan comes on at 230-235 degs.

A long time ago in Hot Rod magazine I saw an article that had a GM coolant fan switch that turned the fan(s) on at 195-200 degs.

There are two companies that sell fan switches. Hypertech and Jet Performance. Both seem to be at about the same price and quality. Look on Summit and Jegs website to compare. They both sell these fan switches. Is your RS a V8 or V6? If it's a V6 the fan switch won't work for you.

230 - 235 is right around the normal range that the fans come on. I bought a Hypertech Thermomaster chip for mine I bought the one that has a lower fan setting. But you do have to go to a lower thermostat to use it. They recomend 160 but say you can run a 180. I have the 180 in mine and noticed btwn that and the chip the fans come on earlier. That's about the only benefit that I noticed from the chip. I only paid around $40.00 for mine on ebay. I know they go for alot more brand new.

The fan switch won't work for V6s because neither of these companies makes their switches for V6s, only V8s. But, if I were you, I would just rig up a custom switch to turn the fans on or off whenever you want to. I have done it and I love it.

You may be worried that you would forget about the fan switch and the car would overheat, but after 2 days of driving around and turning the custom fan switch on, it becomes natural (I watch my gauges religiously, anyway).

Also, I would do what the post above person did. The Hypertech Thermomaster PROM/Chip is calibrated for a cooler thermostat and will keep the temps down (and give you some more HP and TQ). I have one and I love it, too.

If you want to rig up a custom switch, just let me know, and I will give you detailed instuctions on how to rig it up to your car. My car is a little bit different than yours, but the steps involved are exactly the same. Trust me, it is pretty easy. If I can do it, anyone can.

so since the fan isn't turned on by the computer, noone makes a single wire fan switch to turn it on sooner? The thirdgen.org article says to use a switch from hypetech(p/n#4028) so I was gonna get that one. But you guys say it won't work? only reason I asked is to find out if someone use a GM switch or if they(GM) sells one.

Oops, sorry about that. I was wrong. You can get the Hypertech Fan Switch #4028 for your V6. When I looked in the catalog, it didn't list the V6 but on the website it did. Guess I should have checked, first.
