Can anyone recommend a place to purchase a lightweight carpet kit for a 93-02 Camaro?

Lightweight carpet? Never heard of it. If you want, I guess you can pull the padding off your stock one, but for the amount of weight you save... I would rather have the quieter ride!!

I haven't purchased anything from them before but www.ls1speed.com carries what you are looking for. They offer lightweight carpet for the 4th gen. Just go to their site and do a search for carpet.

I think "Year One" sells lightweight carpet. Pulling the padding off the stock carpet is a PITA. And it doesn't save as much weight as the light weight stuff.

Someday I'll invest in a set.

yea, I am guessing that the carpet out of the F-body is less than 30 pounds. I ripped out all mine because its crashed and ruined and all, and I just stripped it for the motor, but it didn't weigh much at all. Also, it was surprisingly thin. Just get lexan windows or some other weight reduction mod instead. Not worth the fricken hassle anyways, even if it reduced 100lbs.

But if it's time to replace the carpet anyway you might as well get the lighter stuff. Couldn't hurt anything. Prolly not worth it if your carpet is goof though...........Later

The carpet weighs 38#. If you've already done all the other weight reduction stuff, light weight carpet can represent an appreciable savings. And, many racing classes and special events do not allow Lexan window replacement.

I have no A/C, no stereo, no bumper supports, no back seat, a low weight driver's seat, no drivers side airbag, no cruise, no AIR, lightweight drag wheels and tires, about 1/2 of the carpet padding removed, and my car still weighed 3,635# with me (190#) in it the last time I ran it. I'd love to find another 200# of weight reduction, so 15# from the carpet would be a good start.

Thanks bn_bullet and Fred for the info!

For those of you who don't know, this lightweight carpet is going in a dedicated race car. Also considering the 12 point cage was just put in, the carpet is not in the car.

When I pulled my factory carpet out of my 97 WS6 and put on the scale it weighed 44 lbs. I have read that the lightweight carpet kit is only 18 lbs. That is a 26 lb savings in just carpet. Lexan windows work great but would probably put me under my 3000 lb weight limit for my class. And I want the car to look as stock as possible.

                      Kevin:

Is the seat on a "slider"? Is it the "double locking" type that NHRA supposedly requires for certification? I have a slider on my seat, and it is "FIA" approved, but I don't think it will meet NHRA because it isn't a double locker.

Also, how are you going to brace the seat to the cross-bar? Maybe it is braced, but I can't see it. I am working on that one too.... technically any aftermarket seat needs to be bolted to the cross-bar, but they have never called me on it in "tech". I changed the harness straps to "wrap-around" install, and I figure I'll use the bolt clip on the cross-bar for a seat brace that can be unbolted to allow the seat to be removed for access to the back of the car.

What happened with the chassis in Wahington?

You know, it's pretty funny you mentioned this, there is a guy in my building with an stock integra with an exhaust that was cutting out his carpet and he asked me for a hand to remove his backseats...I asked him why and he said to make his car faster.

He also mentioned that he was going to cut his power steering line so it doesn't use un-needed horsepower. Who cares if the car won't turn right? :-)

I told him that his next step is to feed the mice in the wheel under his hood...he didn't find that very funny...I did

I did not get a close look at whether or not the seats were on a slider or not. I do believe he said they were though. The car is full of parts in boxes so it was a little hard to see.

As far as bracing the seats to the cross-bar, we are also still going to have to work on that. Hopefully NHRA won't be too hard on that one! I was under the impression that the crossbar just had to support the back of the seat in an upright position. I guess I will have to look in my NHRA rulebook.

I'm not sure what you mean by "What happened with the chassis in Washington?"

Sounds like some of the ricers in my area. My friend bought a civic that had a couple things done to it. Later we found out that the windshield washer system had been removed for "weight reduction" by the previous owner. I could understand this on a race car, but this was a 92 HP daily driver! I think he could have saved more weight by not super sizing his lunch at McD's.
