saw something weird at the track??

hi everyone,
I went to the track last week and i saw something weird I've been meaning to ask about. There was this beast 10second late 1980's style mustang, but when it raced I noticed something very weird..... It only had 1 gear, thats right, 1 gear. All throughout the 1/4mile he had just one gear and i didn't hear any shifting anywhere, it just kept climbing the revs till he got to the end. He musta been going something crazy like +140mph at the finish line and all in what sounded like 1 gear.

Is this possible??? And just before anyone says it, no there was definitely no shifts in his run coz I would have heard when the engine was shifting, but this thing just kept climbing in rpms like I said. ANyone got any clue what knida transmission this was??

I know there are some new tranny's out that use bands instead of gears. It allows the transmission to move linearly or continuously w/ no shifting. However, of these transmissions would be strong enough to handle a 10 second car, at least not the ones I have seen.

Other than that, the only thing close to what you described is a powerglide (I think that is what its called), it only has 2 gears, and the shifting is very subtle.

slip and slide

yea it was probably a powerglide tranny or known as the slip and slide. every one thinks the 350 turbo is bullit proof that slip and slide tops it easily. i had one in my 66 buick special.
