  • piston and stroke experts...advise?

will a piston for a 6" rod fit/work with a 5.7" rod and 3.75" stroke? Do I have to get pistons made for a 383, or are 350 pistons all the same? Last but not least...will pistons made for an LT1 fit in any old 350/383?
    82 camaro x2:
    82 z28 w/ 305 (for now) 4 speed saginaw
    82 berrlinetta with 350 .060 over...3 speed auto

The Z28 is back under the knife, after the transmission, now its the entire engine....will post pics when all finished.

Pistons and rods must be "matched". You only have a certain amount of room between the crank throw at bottom dead center and the top of the engine block (deck). That space must be filled by the combined length of the rod and the height of the piston above the wrist pin. Since that total length must be a constant, as you increase connecting rod length, you must make a corresponding reduction in the height of the piston above the wrist pin, which means a longer rod needs a piston with the wrist pin located closer to the top of the piston. Otherwise, the piston will push out of the top of the deck and hit the head.

Your pistons also must reflect the actual "bore" of the cylinders. A piston for a 350 will not work in a 355, or a 383, where the bore has been increased by 0.030". In that case you need a piston that is also 0.030" larger in diameter.

Gen 1 and Gen 2 SBC Chevy pistons are the same.
