we have a 87 camaro z28 with 305, and we would like somebody to answer this:

without changing motors, how can I get more power for cheap, besides changing exhaust and chips?

You could put in 1.6 roller rockers and K&N air filter.
IF you have a TPI setup try the site www.3rdgen.org they should have plenty of advice though I've never been there myself.

And if your up to if you could even put in a 350 cam. It would have a nice slightly lumpy exhaust sound but not too radical.

what we are after is something where we can leave rubber on cement and not just dirt. yanking the engine is out of the question, but we may try a new filter. its the last year of camaro that was carbureted. is there a way we can tune the carb in any way? page for the car

it has a non-traditional exhaust, so we cant run headers, though be may slowly add a borla exhaust piece by piece, since we have a very limited budget considering the amount of audio.

easy bolt on?

we would prefer an easy bolt on, as a air cleaner or, if they make em for the old camaro, a cold air intake. anyone know where to get some cheap ram air hoods that are functional like some firebirds have?

There just isn't a lot you can do other than teh commetns mentioend already. The thrid gens are geat cars, but were all short on power, even teh IROCs were not supercars. Opening up teh exhaust is about teh only way without major mods in teh engine compartmetn. If you have a cat on teh car, best bet would be to repalcve with a high flo cat and 3" exhaust. You will notice a difference in the low end torque. I can spin teh tires on my 92 RS 305 automatic since I did teh ehxaust--could not before.

dont be so worked up over "ram air".. it does not even start working till around 90mph and up anyway.. and the increase is not that substantial.

we had an 87 TA... if you want more power.. you need to spend alot more money than you are talking about...otherwise... sell it and get a 4th gen.

Since I have the same motor, I'll tell you the best thing to do would be a good tune-up, then a good 3" catback. The factory exhaust on the carbed motor is garbage. Get a 3" cat to go with it. Check out ww.thirdgen.org, lots of good info. Other than replacing the motor, I wouldn't do too much to a carbed 3rdgen motor. I'v got headers/chip/exh. among other things. Save your money and get a crate motor is probably the best thing I can tell u to do if you want more power. Either that or focus on suspension/brakes!
