  • What do y'all think?

I've kinda talked my parents into getting me a car for graduation... I'm gonna sell my V6 Camaro and get either a Trans Am or Z28.. Today I looked at a local Trans Am, it was a 97 A4, needed new paint, 80K, T-tops, ran smooth... I wasn't impressed, they were askin $8500...

Then there was a white SS at a local lot, couldn't tell what year... So i stopped... Turned out to be a pristine 01, 6spd, Fully optioned... 28K miles, I was drooling, but 'twas outta my price range...

So I came home disappointed, but I gave autotrader a whirl... There were about 2 cars within a 100 mile radius worth looking at... here is one that I want yalls opinion on...
    1996 Trans Am

If its still available I'm gonna try to get up there Monday (spring break, w00t!) to drive it... but I wanted some feedback first...

    Thanks

The first T/A is a big fat NO, I think. I got a 96 T/A with every single option except ws6 with 47300 miles and in excelent shape for only 10000. The second T/A looks good, just ask about the opti spark, check for leaks, and get all the service and performace parts receipts. Test out all the gears to. And I would rip the throttle a little too, just to see if it bogs at high rpm's or the trans doesnt shift. Check window motors too, all the motors are really slow but just make sure they work.
    Later,
    Tom
and get a T/A, youll regret it if you dont, and get a z. But ss's are cool.

The 96 in the ad looks nice, and is priced pretty fair, just be sure the guy who did the work, did it right.

I personally like the looks of Trans Ams better... 98+ WS6's especially... But the Camaro has a special place in my heart, it was my first car...

Thanks for the pointers, I'll ask lots of questions... When I go see it, I'll take a thorough test drive too... I'm not traveling an hour to see the car for 5 mins and then be done with it...

The TA in the ad seems like a very fair price for the work that's already been done. I've never been a fan of white cars, but I'm not the one buying it. Price wise, looks good.

White wouldn't be my first color choice either... But the selection, even within 300 miles, is very limited...

I just ran across this --> 98 SS

I called the guy, but no one answered... I'm thinking its gonna have a large number of miles on it . It looks to be in good condition though. And its in town, so I may be able to see it today

Oh one other thing... I'm not too knowledgeable about the LT1s & LS1s... Someone mentioned the optispark earlier... I've heard lot of people talk about them, but normally in relation to LT1s... Do LS1s have optispark problems like the LT1s?

Be very careful about buying a used car that has been sprayed!

You could ask the owner how much the ZEX system was used but he will probably just lie like everyone else who is selling a car with a n20 kit already installed.

Drive it and see how it runs, or even better see if you can borrow a scanmaster and then drive it.

Price is right *IF* it is good shape and good mechanical condtion.

Kevin, where do you see that the car's been sprayed? I might be missing something, but I don't see anything in the ad that says the car has a nitrous system installed. In fact, it says it's never been raced or abused. It must have a ton of miles on it for that price, seems very low for a true SS. Maybe it's a clone?

Dave, he was referring to the Trans Am. It had the Zex kit...

That's what I was thinking about the SS though... That price is low if it truly is, so it must have a ton of miles. I guess it could be a Z28 with SS hood & badges... That would make it more reasonable, but not as cool...

I got my 1998 Formula (perfect condition, 69k miles, all options except WS6, leather) .... for only $8300. I got it from these people in paulding county, kind of east of kennesaw.

anyway if i were you, just wait. dont be impulsive. I know firsthand exactly how few f-bodies are for sale within 300 miles of atlanta, it really sucks but thats just how it is. If i were you, just watch ebaymotors.com and autotrader on a daily basis... eventually the car you want WILL pop up close to home. you just gotta be persistent.

and in the mean time, you can just continue to save money
