The stock rear axle is a rather weak 10-bolt. The ring gear is 7.50/7.625". If your Formula is a 6-speed manual, and has the original gears in it, they are 3.42:1. If its an automatic, they could be either 2.73:1 or 3.23:1. If you have a selectable 1st gear, its the 3.23. If you only have 2nd gear on the selector, its a 2.73.
The reason they need to know what gears you have now is because the 3.23 and 3.42 gears originally came with a "3-series" carrier, and need gears for that carrier. The 2.73 gears came in a "2-series" carrier, so if you want to go to a higher numerical rear, you either need to upgrade to a new 3-series carrier, or buy gears that are specifically cut for the 2-series.
Look on your build tag for these codes:
GU2 = 2.73
GU5 = 3.23
GU6 = 3.42Fred

Fred pretty much has the tech end covered.
You will need: The gears themselves ( I like SLP/GM Motive), an install kit that contains all bearings, seals and shims to refresh the rear end unit with the exception of a limited slip assembly rebuild. You will also need differential lube and a tube of posi additive. I would contact Mike at stealth performance, one of our sponsoring vendors. He'll set you up with a total kit that will be a great price. You should get out the door for under $300 for the parts, labor at your local drivetrain shop will be roughly $300. So basically, to do a rear gear swap, look at spending $600-700 by the time all is done. That doesn't include reprogramming of the computer to correct for a gear swap. For that, you'll need either a Hypertech Power Programmer or equivilant, LT-1 edit or a custom program inserted into the computer.
