  • Ram Air Setup

I recently asked some questions about the ram air box. In the meantime I ordered a OEM ram air box but it doesn't include the extension harness like the SLP package does for the MAF sensor.

I was wondering if splicing in wires to extend the existing harness would do the trick, if it was too short? Or will the computer throw a fit?

If it would work, are there any downsides or something I really would have to pay attention to to avoid any potential problems?

    Thanks

I'm sure splicing will be fine. I know soldering a joint very slightly changes its resistance, but I really doubt it would be enough to make a difference.

if you figure out what guage and medium the stock wire is made out of, there really shouldn't be any problem splicing in some extra length. just make sure the wires are clean, well spliced and use plenty of black electrical tape for weatherproofing!

how much does the extra long harness cost anyway?

Splice it... you can check the quality of the work after you are done. The pink wire is 12V. Turn the key on and make sure you have good voltage before and after you splice it. The black/white wire is ground... make sure its a good one, before and after. Yellow is the signal wire, and the signal is a variable frequency, so it will not be affected by minor changes in resistance due to a splice.

Thanks guys. At work inside generators we splice RTD wiring with butt splices. A little aluminum tube where you stick the wires in on either side and use a crimping tool. That shouldn't change the resistance. I would also use some shrink hose / tubing and some plastic tubing.

It's not that expensive when you get it from GM parts direct (close to $50 shipped to US address). The problem I have is, that they don't ship to Canada. If I sent it to a friend in the US and he sends it to me, it adds to the cost.

I don't know of any discount places here in Ontario. You can get a discount if you work for GM but I don't.

I know it's not that much but it all adds up. It seems to be a simple fix.

Have you tried calling Jason Cromer at Sam Taylor Buick Cadillac?? He sells at cost. You could probably save a pretty penny.

Just ordered it from this guy here. Haven't received it yet.

                http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread...29#post4778029

All the info is there. It doesn't include everything neede like the one from SLP but it's supposedly the original GM one. That's why I started this thread.
