I have a 1994 6-speed z-28. The car acted up a bit today, it seemed to hang in fourth gear once or twice. I had to shove it back into nuetral. The car runs great, and has never given me any trouble. I left to go to the store and made it down the road a bit. The care stop shifting at all. I can go from third straight back into nuetral and that is it. I had to drive the car home in third gear. This sucks. This is my first f-body and I know very little about the t-56. The clutch will still engage and disengage, but i only have 3rd gear. Any ideas on this one? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

Are you sure the clutch is truly disengaging? If youre driving along in 3rd and you put your foot on the clutch, can you pull the shifter in and out of gear and rev the engine? If the clutch is truly disengaging, and you only have 3rd......thats wierd. Usually, you will only have 4th, as that is your 1:1 ratio and does not involve the meshing of the cluster.

If your clutch is doing what it is supposed to do, then its gotta be something internal IS the fluid up to level? DId you get any grinding before it crapped out? What happens when you try to put it in other gears?

The clutch will engage and disengage. I had to drive the car home in third when this happend. I could still stop and start using the clutch. I cannot force it into another gear, it just will not go. The shifter will move maybe 3 inches in total, ie from third to nuetral, and back to third.

Well, the t-56 is an internal rail type shifter, so there's no external linkeage to check. You'll probably need to pull the shifter knob, surround bezel and boot, as well as the main rubber boot that seals to the body. Now you'll have access to the shifter mounting. There are 4 bolts that hold the shifter to the top of the trans. Remove them and you can lift the assembly out and inspect the shifter. If all is fine with that, the problem is an internal one and will need a teardown.
