Well, you asked for it.
I knew it would be you or Ken.

You pose a good question. Maybe nothing? Try adjusting it and see what happens! If the shift characteristics change, then you know it does something..... I could find out for sure for you, but it wont be until Sunday. Id have to ask the guru (my father). If this question drops down too far by Sunday, bump it up to the top to remind me to ask.
If you use the word detent cable, it may eliminate the all of these annoying sarcastic comments (kidding, of course, Joe).

TV cables basically just transfer a throttle movement at the throttle body and mechanically transmit it to the transmission. The throttle input is read and the transmission's shift firmness and shift points are altered according to throttle position. As far as what it does in our cars, most likely the same thing only the computer uses a sensor to read the throttle input and the computer electrically makes the changes to the transmission. I know on my GN, the TV cable is a direct mechanic link to the trans as it is not computer controlled, only the lockup portion is. Since 4L60Es are controlled by the ECM, there must be a mechanical to electrical conversion sensor somewhere.
Then what is the second cable that goes to the throttle body?
http://www.claire-marie.net/105_0538.JPG The one closer to the intake. I thought it went to the trans but it doesn't. It turns and goes over the brake booster back down and into the fender in front of the left front tire. Is it the cruise control?
This one is the cruise cable and this is the throttle cable.
What is it you need to adjust and why? Are you having a problem?
To adjust the cruise cable, you pop up the lock button behind the bracket, take the slack out of the cable by pulling back on the cable housing behind the bracket and then push the button back down.

I was trying to replace the throttle cable and I accidently pulled the slide out retainer that held the cruise control cable on the piece that is held in the bracket. I don't know where to set it at.
The cruise works but it is slow to react when transitioning to go up hill. It will loose a couple of MPH in the transition and then accelerates to catch back up. To be honest, I've never liked the cruise on this car compaired to my old Mustang. I just figured it was because it was an automatic instead of a stick.

Ok, so the info I gave you is enough for you to set it, now?
My A4 Z has always had very nice control with the cruise on.
