  • 96 WS6 wheel-what a nightmare

I am trying to buy a new 17" wheel for my 96 WS6. 96 was a 1 year only wheel being painted silver rather than the polished aluminum used in later years. The parts counter is only getting the polished wheel even though it has a unique part# for 96. Now they are having to get GM parts to do an investigation as to why this is happening.

I have a gut feeling that since only 2500 cars used this wheel, they are only going to keep the polished one available as a replacement. I hope not!

There used to be a company on ebay that sold exact replicas of the GM factory wheels, and they did have the 96 WS6 wheel. I considered it when I was in the market to replace mine (2 of them have curb damage) but for that amount of money I bought an entire set of aftermarket wheels with lug nuts.

I'll sell you my two good ones for "100 billion dollars"

I had to replace one on my 96 WS6 also. I ended up getting a refurbished one from a wheel shop. It was about $220 I think. It is a GM wheel with the raised GM logo on it. If you call some wheel shops you should be able to find one. Good luck

            Ryan,
Did you try to get a wheel from GM? Did you have the same problem? How long ago was this?

When I sold my 96, I had two extra wheels that had 315 BFGDRs on them. I can check with the guy that bought them to see if he'd sell them. He lives in the Richmond, VA area.

                Did you find the rim?
                Is this it?

It looks like it is polished on the rrim but painted on the spokes.
                17x9 in., 5 lug, 4.75" lug pattern. 50mm offset, 7.0 in. backspacing. 5 spokes.

Anyway here is the place I was trying to think of. Somebody where I work is buying a set for his BMW.

Hey Jeff. That looks like it. GM should be cast into the wheel at about the 7 oclock position of the wheel. I can't make it out clearly in the pic.

You could always find a more common 97 and later wheel and simply have the appropriate sections painted. It is the same wheel, only a different finish.

                        Warren,
I got mine about 6 months ago, so it hasn't been too long. I am surprised at least one of the wheel shops in your area can't get you a refurbished one or a brand new one. I never made an attempt to order a brand new replacement though if that is what you really want. If your interested I can get you the number to the wheel place where I got mine. It is in PA though.

Well it turns out the wheel AAA carries does not have the GM logo cast into the front surface, although the wheel is the same design as the stock WS6. It has another logo in place of the GM. The GM parts counter got the correct wheel in. In turns out the wheel manufacturer packaged them with the wrong part number on the boxes causing the polished vs painted type mix up.

                          Thanks guys.

Curious...how much did they charge for one wheel? I've got a bit of curb rash on one of mine, and I might want to replace it.

I am in a position with my parts guy to be able to negotiate. I've used the same parts guy for over 10 years for all of my GM vehicles. I went to the GMpartsdirect web site and looked at their price with shipping and offered that price to him including sales tax. He took it. I think it was like around $380. It's still pretty high priced, but I'm a freak when it comes to cars!

I noticed that the box the wheel came in said "Made in Japan". I wonder who the wheel manufacturer is for those. I know the snowflakes for my 79 is Western Wheel.
