The plant up in canada that produced them had the rights to make cars named either "camaro" or "firebird". But then the plant went outta business, but they still owned the right to make it, so they couldn't be made anywhere else.

but that plant has since been leveled, so we should see a camaro or a firebird in what, 2006? 2007 maybe?

yall wanna know why they realy got axed??? i'll tell ya. plant smant...... now that im leaving the f body scene shortly... i dont have to cover my tush as well.......LOL....

          1. CAFE. corporate average fuel economy. the f body was hurting the numbers.....but....so were all the SUV's. and the SUV were major profit makers.....and they sold 1,000's compaired to one f body... GM was paying epa fines...didnt meet CAFE. The F body was not selling like that price of a model car should.

          2. NHTSA passed a new windshield crash integrity test regulation that took effect in 2003. the current design of the f body would not pass that test. that means the car had to be completely re-designed. $$$$$$. for what? a low selling car, that hurt the CAFE numbers.....? nope. ax it.

          3. "Change over America". The dawn of the "cross over" vehicles, the new hybrids, the creature of comfort and speed and handling all in one..... the f body? crude by these standards.....

will it come back? no... not as an f body. it may come back on a diff platform......but not as the era knew it.

funny......my Envoys have the same HP as the stock 93 - 95 F body v8...........275hp. from an inline 6 cyl. sure ..the torque is not there...... but guess what..? My compTA with the lt4 hot cam and 4:10 gears got better gas mileage on the highway than this Envoy...............

          uh huh.....tis true.

Very good info Ken! I knew it basically boiled down to money in one form or another.

Oh well, maybe we all own a classic and don't even know it yet!

I sure hope not. Because they'll mess it up. If chevy gets a variant of the GTO it should fill the void a bit.

but if they were to bring it back and get it right. hopefully by then I'll be making the greenbacks to be able to afford one

I just hope when they do come back, they just wont slap the name on a borrowed platform, like the Pontiac Vibe. It's funny I went to check out the new cars from Pontiac. I looked inside the Vibe, and the interrior look very similar to the Toyota Matrix in the adjacent lot. Hmm I thought I must be confused, so I proceided to look under the hood, to my disamy the plastic cover read VVTi, oh yeah it's a Toyota, only Toyotas have the VVTi head setup, like the VTEC on Honda's. Like Ken said it comes down to money. My question is how has the Mustang stayed upfloat in this Market, considering you have to pay extra $1000 guzzler tax, like here in NY?

They'll come back as some retro rod like the T-Bird. They won't be fast and they will cost a ton and they will be marketed to people who have nostalgic memories of the good old days.

I just pray that they don't do away with the Vette. The last bastion of speed for GM performance guys.

The Vette will never go away, that's GM's flagship.

As for the F-body, I think someone hit the nail on the head. The F-Body, shared platform of the Firebird and Camaro, is most likley won't be returning.

I've been keeping an eye/ear out and through other boards and certain members on said boards, there's pretty strong rumors of a camaro making a return in 06/07 but nothing is being heard about a new firebird.

here's the scenario as I think it will play out....

Pontiac got the GTO.... it's one step below the corvette in performance just like the f-body used to be. It fixes all the problems that Ken says the f-body had.

Chevy will get a rebadged GTO in the previously mentioned 2007 time frame and it will be named Camaro. Base V8 Camaro may have a few ponies less than the GTO, but the SS version will match the GTO's numbers. The firebird will not come back. The camaro was always the better selling name of the two, and there's no need for another rwd V8 car for pontiac if they've got the GTO. What happens to the GTO (and hence, the next Camaro) in the next 3 years is anybody's guess....
