  • Aftermarket Tach Install

I'm installing an aftermarket tachometer in my 91 Camaro (stock tach is acting crazy). There are four wires to hook up. After hunting wires for a couple of days and looking through wiring diagrams I found three of wires I need to hook up. I've already found/hooked up 12V dash lighting, a good ground, and tach signal. The only one I can't figure out where to hook up is a 12V ignition source. There are a ton of wires under the steering column and I can't seem to find a wire for the ignition switch. Any suggestions or advice?

P.S. The tach is an Autometer Sport-Comp 5" 8000 RPM Tach, if that helps.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Don't know the details of the 91's, but on the 4th Gens, the fuse panel at the end of the dash has a small square hole with a "spade lug" in it, labeled "IGN". That is +12V switched, fuse protected power, and I use it for all my instrument power. Take a look at your fuse panel and maybe you will see something similar. You just crimp a matching female plug on it and press it into the connection.... see orange wire below:

Thanks , Injuneer. I figured that out yesterday from some people I asked on another forum. They kept telling me to use the IGN spot but I was stupid and thought that since there was no fuse their I couldn't use it.

The easiest way I know of is to tap into the 12V switched lead that goes to your stereo...thats what I did for mine.
