any one know about how the govener works on 97 formulas 6 spd w/ ws-6??? I had it up to about 133 in 6th and stopped but then I tryed again and it went past 133 as long as i stayed in 5th but as soon as i put it in 6th i was stuck at that speed. i had it up to 145 in 5th which was around 5 grand if i remeber right. any help?????

You can't get past the aerodynamic/drag "wall" in 6th gear.... there is not enough HP available at the lower RPM to allow the car to go any faster in 6th. By downshifting to 5th, you raise the RPM and increase the HP available to push past the aero drag HP and reach a higher limit.
If your car came with Z-rated tires, the speed limiter is set at 160mph (96 and later models only.... pre-96 are 255mph) and most magazines that tested the cars when new found the max speed to be about 153-156mph.
I hope you are doing this somewhere where you aren't going to kill someone. I only go over 100mph on a "track".Fred

This may be my first v-8 but that doesn't mean i don't know how to drive...... i do not do this all the time but i wanted to see where it cut out or if it did......this is the reason i got the car......to go fast quick and to get to 100-110 with in the same day ...... yea i am doing this somewhere safe......it is about a 5 mile striaght road with virtually no bumps.....thanxs for the help guys.Comment

I haven't read the whole post, but here's some info I gathered from experience.
93-95 cars with non z rated tires and an older PCM calibration were limited to 108 MPH and received a 110 speedo.
94 and 95 cars had a newer calibration from GM which raised the limit to 118 MPH.
93-95 Z-rated cars all had the speed limiter set to 255 MPH.
96-02 F cars with non z-rated tires all had 118 MPH speed limiters.
96-02 F cars with Z rated tires were all limited to 160 MPH.Fred

in cali technicly the fastest legal speed is 75..so if u are doing 80 technicly they can pull ur lic. on the spot...although technicly modding a car from anything but stock by anyone but the manufacturer is "illegal" also..cali has all kinds of laws lolComment
