  • 93 formula auto tranny problem

I just bought a 93 Firebird Formula with an automatic. Always at 10 mph regardless of throttle it shifts into second with a jolt. Every other shift is smooth and normal. What could cause it to shift like this?

There is a valve in the valve body that is worn and leaking. The valve body can be removed without pulling the trans, and the valve can be drilled out and replaced with a new larger replacement from Sonnax. Tranny shops do this on a regular basis.... about $200.

Never mind, I see your in the throws of pulling the whole trans anyway.

I agree with pete, its probably in the valve body....you may have to drop the valve body and go through it.

A quick one to try - The thottle pressure valve may be hanging. Give the detent cable a couple of tugs and move it back and forth.

Check the TV cable first. (I think it is called TV) Have someone press the pedal to the floor, and check the position of the throttle body, and cables going to the throttle body. Pretty sure there are 3 cables going to the throttle body for the 93's (4L60), where the 94's and up had 2 cables (4L60-E). I helped a friend do a TransGo kit on his 93, (700R4 kit) and had to adjust that cable, because it was not tight and was not opening the TB blades fully under WOT. He still has to adjust it from time to time, because it slips. Pretty sure throttle position has something to do with the RPM it shifts at. Let me know if I am wrong, but I would check that before you pull the valve body out.
