  • BAD news....

I was installing my opti today and I put a pry bar on the end of the crank pulley and realized I have about an 1/8 inch of end play . I am very upset. Im getting real frustrated with this car. I need to fix this as inexpensively as possible so that my wife doesnt kill me. Has anyone ever put a set of bearings in one of these things with the motor in the car?

Are you referring to the "front" main bearing?

Well... I can say that I've done it. You can't say that it's fun in the least. It involves using an engine hoist to suspend the engine and trans while your drop the K member. This gives total access to the bottom of the engine. I helped someone do this, I wasn't present for every single step but at least I know we've done it.

      I feel your pain.

The crank can be pryed forward about an 1/8 of an inch with a prybar on the balancer against the front sway bar. I dont know which bearing has the thrust surface on it, but I would assume that it is shot.....unless you guys can think of another reason the crank would slide forward like that.

Just a long shot, but did you physically see the crank move, or was it possible when you pried on the damper, you were simply bending the outer ring of the damper back and forth?

I actually took the damper off and was prying on the damper support (3 prong thing that holds the damper to the crank) and it was definately the crank. Bummer. I guess if our gonna play, you gotta pay so, ive got the tranny ripped out and im on my to the subframe and stuff.......im loving it

                  Sorry broh.

If I were close by I would give ya a hand.

Just remember that without the tranny in place, the engine gets a little more wiggly when supported from above so be careful! I don't completely trust a cherry picker supporting an engine when I am directly beneath it. We used an extra saftey chain wrapped around an overhead beam just in case the hoist let go.

Well, it took me about 5 hours with the help of a friend and ive got it all apart. Tranny out, subframe dropped, and oil pan off. Ive got even worse news now. The crank is trash. The thrust surface on the crank is completely chewed. I've gotta get it off the lift tomorrow, so im gonna go with a reman crank kit. OEM stuff. Thats what is in it now. Hopfefully I can swap cranks with the motor in the car. Its gonna be a PITA, but I really dont want to pull it now that ive come this far.

I will watch out for that cherry picker.

Another nice thing that I noticed is that the nose of the starter is busted off I love it!

There is nothing I hate worse than doing a crank overhead. The only tip I can give you that will make the install easier is cover the rod bolts with tubing that is more than double the length you might normally use. When you push each piston up into the bore, the extra length of tubing makes it far easier to align the rods when you are lifting the crank overhead. You can easily line up the tubing while the crank is still several inches below the block.

Sounds like a golden oppurtunity to pull the block and have a 4 bolt splayed conversion done on at least the middle 3.

I can't even imagine attempting to properly assemble/install a rotating asembly from below while the motor is still in the car!

Good luck Sean. Hope it goes well.

I'll be having nightmares about the last time I did it just thinking about it.

You guys are making me feel real good about this.....

I wish I had the money to do something fun. My motto has always been "break it and build it bigger and better", but money has been too tight. I feel bad just slamming another crank in it.

Well, im off in about in hour to go attempt this crazy idea......i'll post later on and let you know how it turns out.
