starter wont shut off

well i put a new starter in (1994 formula) and was fine till after i started the car. when i shut it off the starter kept spinning. it wasnt engaging the the fly whell but it just kept spinning. whats wrong

The starter solenoid is responsible for transmitting power to the starter. Either the solenoid is fried or the trigger wire to the solenoid for whatever reason (maybe bad ignition switch) is staying energized.
