  • Tire size/speedo question

This is probably a dumb question, but I am getting new tires put on the car on Saturday. I am ditching my 235/55/16's in favor of some 245/50/16's. This won't affect the accuracy of my speedometer will it? Again, if this is a stupid question, I apologize.

the rolling diameter of the 245/50r16 is .57" shorter than the 235/55r16... so your speed0 will read only slightly fast.... no biggie... not so much it will make a big diff...and it might save you from getting a ticket from some cop that looks for folks breaking the "5 over" the speed limit.

Cool deal, thanks Ken! I didn't think it would change much, just wanted to make sure.

To put some numbers on it, the speedo will read 2% higher than actual speed. When you are actually going 60 MPH, your speedo will indicate 61.2 MPH.... no biggie. But every time you drive 1,000 miles, your odometer will show 1,020 miles driven.

To minimize the error, you could consider using 255/50-16 tires. Or you could just have the diameter corrected in the PCM.
