  • Uneven brake pad wear....

I'm replacing front brake pads, and noticed the old pads are worn very unevenly. On both front brakes, the outboard pad has 25% or less pad remaining, while the inboard pad has about 75% of the pad remaining. This can't be normal can it? The rear brakes seem to be wearing normally. I removed the rear calipers and checked them. What is a common cause of this symptom?

Did you properly lube all of the brake components when you did them last? That could very well be the cause....

I just bought the car in February and am in the process now of doing all the pm work. I don't know who worked on the brakes last. The car only has 36,000 miles on it, so they could be original pads for all I know. There were some rust spots on the surfaces of the pads, so that would be my guess.

Remove the pads, disassemble the calipers, completely clean and lubricate the moving parts. If the moving parts surfaces are pitted, they will need to be replaced.

Outboard pad is worn, inboard not means that your caliper slides are sticking. Inboard pad worn, outboard not means caliper piston sticking.

-Is one of your dust boots ripped or missing? this is the major cause for slide problems. New slides and boots can be had for ~$20 from the local parts store.
