  • IS THIS AN F-BODY?!

Um guys.... I was walking through the parking lot here at work and I saw the weirdest looking car. It was called an Studebaker Avanti. I've seen it before but never looked inside...Well I did some research after I saw this in the interior!!!!

IS THIS AN F-BODY!? I mean I has the Trans Am interior with some wood trim...I've just started looking into this bizarre car and was wondering if you guys knew anything more. Here are some more pictures....

      This is an '04

So let me think this through guys....
If the F-Body was axed in 02 then what is this '04 F-body looking car? Below is a picture of a 2004 Avanti...which clearly resembles an F-Body platform. If the plant was axed and production was fully stopped then what is this?? Does this give me hope?

It gives me hope. There were talks of moving the F-Body production stateside but because of legal issues with closing the canada plant down they had to cut the camaro/firebird out of the prod line. but they could bring it back around '07-'08...herse what i've found...
      The Article...
      specifically...
As had been pointed out earlier in "Plans for a new 5th Gen...." there are some very sticky contractual agreements assosiated with the St. Therese Canadian F-body assembly plant. Harden goes so far as to say:
"That being said, I can imagine a situation that would include a package of incentives given to GM to bring the F-body assembly to the St. Therese plant that would commit GM to the plant for a period of time and not allow the switching of location unless the model was cancelled."

Beleive me when I say there are movers and shakers behind the scenes screaming,"Just give me x dollars and I'll build a Camaro plant!" Just like you and me GM has a budget with limited resources. Just like you and me they are bound by complicated contractual agreements.

That is an Avanti. It is basically a modified F-body. They buy entire cars, and modify them to make the Avanti.. It is basically a remanufactured vehicle.

I'm guessing they have a stock of 2002 f-bodys they are converting. Possibly hundreds of them.. I wish their website was more descriptive. I'm guessing they dont want to hype the fact their "Luxury car" is just a re-bodied firebird.

          The f-body is dead.

The Avanti dates back to 1963. It was Studebaker's last gasp as a major automobile manufactuer in South Bend Indiana (they also made covered wagons that date back to the 1850's). They even made compact cars like the Lark. Studebaker closed up shop in 1965 or so, beat out by American Motors.

Studebaker hired famous automobile designer, Brooke Stevens to design and develope the Avanti. A sharp modern car, sporty, fiberglass body, but not a Vette. It did have Studebaker's 327 v-8, but NOT a Chevy engine until its later creations by various holders of the trademark name. The factory in South Bend was closed, but the Avanti name was sold, and manufacturing was moved to Youngstown Ohio during the 1970's.

There is a Studebaker Museum in South Bend, and very active clubs around the world. Lots of information is availble by doing a search on the web.

I came across that too. I got excited until I read that. I had all these visions of GM f-body conspiracies. Oh well. I still haven't found a car that I'd trade my WS6 for.

                The avanti is ugly anywyas.

Amen. Why somebody would pay large money to wreck a perfectly good firebird is beyond me.

                    Now wait a minute.......

What if you have a perfectly good Firebird that happens to have been involved in a spin where most every surface got tagged just enough that it would require reworking of every panel to put it back together? Especially if you have a perfectly fine car otherwise, a custom job like this albiet ugly, might make sense.

As bad as it looks I like what they did to the door handles, f-bods had the the same clunky handles for 2 generations. As far as custom fabrication goes, anyone can stick fake woodtrim on the inside!

And do you recognize the door handles? It looks to me like they took them right off a C-5 Vette. I wish I had the know-how and resources to do that to my car.

You're right those do look like the C5 corvette handles, they look nice and flush with the surface. The doors are a lot smoother also.
