  • Im back on the road.....

Kinda.... I got the lower end together and the motor back in the car and running. The machine shop saved the crank by using basicly a custom main bearing with a .040 over thrust surface. I was happy about that.

The car runs like S**!!! though. Every time I disconnect the battery, I gotta go through this. The computer has to relearn. It spits and sputters, backfires on decel, etc.. Its very frustrating. I now think that its because the calibration is so far out of whack. I am having Ion with MadZ28 do an OBDI program for the stroker setup. Hopefully, this corrects the problem.

Glad to hear you got everything back together Sean. Man I wish my crank could be finished that fast!

I've been over 2 months now for my forging to be ready at Callies!

Don't know about the .040 bearing though. Not to make you paranoid, but it may be prone to wiping the bearing again.

The bearing itself is not .040, just the thrust surface. The rest of the crank was mint. The machine shop that did it is very reptuable and builds many race engines. He new it was a nice balanced stroker crank that would be severely abused. He didnt seem to have a problem with it.

But thanks for making me paranoid

Yes, these guys are good. I told them my scenario and that I needed it ASAP and they took care of me. Charged me, but took care of me

You must be getting a custom forging to be 2 months???

I'm not sure I know what that means.

                    could it be

maybe he is talking aobut 40 over thrust bearings? I have seen oversized ones...just making it sound strange by adding the main bearing comment...

OK, the rear main bearing controls the endplay of the crank. The surface that the crank hits to keep it from walking back and forth is the thrust surface of the bearing. The thrust surface on the bearing was wiped out and grooved the crank, not on the journal itself, but on the thrust surface. I had about an 1/8 inch of endplay (as opposed to .006"). This surface was machined flat and an oversized thrust bearing was used.

Doh, ok, for some reason I was not thinking of the rear main. I am familiar with the thrust surfaces and oversize bearings.

what kinda power gains did you notice from the 350 to the 383? I am currious because I have the same project in the garage. but I am totally building the engine from top to bottom with after market parts, from the carb to the heads, to the fuel pump, etc. Anyways.....better HP, or just more torque?

The Z28 is back under the knife, after the transmission, now its the entire engine....will post pics when all finished.

Yeah, it is going to be cross-drilled, and knife-edged. They do all of it in one process. It is just taking forever!
