  • More problems.....

I went on a break in cruise for about a half hour tonight. I did some spirited driving (under 5500 rpm) to help my PCM relearn. The car is just not pulling like it should..... I noticed a weird hot smell almost like plastic burning. I figured it was the engine working itself in again. It kept up though. I got it back in the driveway and popped the hood (now its almost dark out) and I SEE THE NUMBER 8 CYLINDER HEADER PRIMARY GLOWING RED!!

Is this cylinder starving for fuel? DO you think I smoked a piston or a valve? I havent pulled the plug yet as it was too hot, but I am almost afraid to look

The plug looks a little lean, but no more than the others. A burnt exhaust valve would cause this huh?

I have seen this from the header flange to the block leaking in extra air.

Are you talking about just a leaking header gasket?

Had you just been spraying? My rear 4 primaries would glow for a few minutes sometimes after a few n20 runs! It is common for the rear 4 and especially the rear 2 ( #8, #7) to lean out on nitrous motors delivering the juice through the TB.

Could be a tosted #8 exhaust valve. Listen carefully to the #8 while the motor is running. If you have roasted the #8 exhaust valve seat or burnt the valve itself, you should be able to hear an unusual loud ticking noise through the #8 primary.

No, i dont even have the juice hooked up, as I was planning on taking it easy until the new bottom end seated. I will listen for the ticking and I will also do a compression / leakdown test on it today. I have a feeling its the valve......and it was there before I did the lower end. It was sluggish before. Of course its gotta be the number 8 cyl. .

The compression test didnt go so well. I got 167 PSI in the #8 cylinder. I thought this was pretty good until I checked another cylinder for reference - 212 PSI. So, I am lacking 45 PSI of compression.

The leakdown went the same. I checked # 8 at 15% leakage. I checked another cylinder for reference and it was at about 5% leakage.

So, what are normal numbers for an engine like mine? To me, it seems like an exhaust valve issue.....anybody want to lend me their magic wand so I dont have to pull the head??

Before you pull the head, pull off the valve cover and just make sure there is nothing wrong with the rocker arm, retainer, valve locks, and spring on #8. Could be a bad spring.
