  • Nitrogen.....

its been bounced around by the tire industry for years........
if you can get it cheap enough...it does help.....

nitrogen migrates out of tires 3 to 4 times slower than oxygen....so that means you maintain correct tire pressure for longer itervals......

its also an intert gas the contains no rust causing moisture..which...we dont have a rust issue with most of our rims...but if you get a tire injury..it could help retard any rusting on the belt package...

nitrogen also does not expand or contract like compressed air does during tire heating and cooling conditions...so thats a real good thing...

so next time you are at the tire shop...ask..they just might have installed a nitrogen inflating system there...

    k

how common are nitrogen systems? I strictly deal with Discount Tire...wonder if they have em?

Funny.... I used to do that 20 years ago. you would think that there would be more of a request for it.

Just to clarify... all gasses expand and contract with temperature. The increase in pressure in the tire will be proportional to the absolute temperature change (referenced to degrees Rankine).

Nitrogen prevents "rust" ( = oxidation) because it displaces the oxygen. There is no oxygen present for the iron, or aluminum, or rubber, etc..... to combine with. It is entirely possible for nitrogen to contain water molecules, but less likely to have a high water content because of the separation process used to extract nitrogen from the air.

A couple of months ago I was working in Cincinnati an heard advertisements about Nitrogen in the tires. At first I thought it was a hoax, but then I saw it at another tire place too.

We use Nitrogen a lot at work to keep copper hollow conductors from oxidizing and also store electrical equipment with it to keep the moisture away.

Why not use Helium? It would make the tires much lighter, maybe you would get better gas mileage too

I'm not sure that it would make the tires any lighter, certainly not if it takes the same mass of helium to inflate the tire as it does nitrogen or oxygen.

While it is true that helium is lighter than air . . . but only at atmospheric pressure. Compress it (as in a tire) and you are no longer at atmospheric pressure.

Ever see a tank of compressed helium floating about? Neither have I.

Question: Okay, let's say I have inflated my tires with nitrogen. How do I keep them inflated with nitrogen at home? Great idea, but impractical for most of us.

thats the prob, rogie......you cant keep them properly inflated at home without mixing air into them...... but the bleed out period says you can wait.. when you need more....you go back to joe...... LOL

They've been using nitrogen on aircraft for years now, just think 777 tire the amount of load it carries, I guess it works.
