  • NFB - piece of junk rental car

I rented a car this week to travel to Indiana - didn't want to put the miles on the TA. They gave me an 04 Taurus. This thing got 19 miles to the gallon - all highway. Huh?? So let me get this straight - my 350+ HP car gets better gas mileage than this V6 Taurus. Ford should be embarassed. Oh and I didn't know you could even buy a car without ABS anymore - found out this one didn't have it (or at least it sure didn't act like it) when I tried a hard stop and slid into the intersection! How abhout a CD player at least? It was a VERY long 1K miles in 3 days. Next time I will demand an 04 Grand Prix like I got last time. I could actually live with that!

Rental companies typically go with bare bones models, as you apparently experienced... It should still be getting better than 19 mpg highway though

I drive plenty of rental cars during my job assignments and I agree the Taurus is a pos.

I was driving to work every day with one while my co worker had a Monte Carlo or Impala and he managed to get a lot more miles with his.

Yep a lot of the rentals are bare bone and with cheap tires.

As for cars without ABS, I thought the same. I bought a Jeep Liberty and had all the papers signed. In the middle of the night I woke up and thought to myself, the sales guy never said anything about ABS. So I checked and sure enough it didn't have it. Needless to say I didn't oick it up the next day.

Geez, my mom bought a low mileage 2003 Malibu v6 that was previously a rental and I got 40 on the highway with it.

Well......the 3rd gen Taurus is, but I used to have a 93 SHO with the Yamaha engine and loved that car. It would get close to 30 MPG, not to mention a 93 year model that was a v6 and put out 220 HP, and insurance was dirt cheap. The only three things I didn't like about that car was:

1)The auto tranny was destined to go out
2)It was a front wheel drive
3)Parts were very rare for that car (which also means they were expensive too)

Don't get me wrong though, after I got my f-body, I never looked back.
