  • 1996 Chevy z28 Camaro Problem

I am writting due to a problem with my 96 z28. It is a automatic with like 93,000 miles on it. If I stomp on the gas and it gets to readline at like 5100 rpm-7000 range it starts to just roar and doesn't change gears. But If I let the car go through the gears at normal rpm range it is fine. What could the problem be and what am I looking at price wise to fix it? The fluid is also black color (Trans. Fluis) it is supposed to be a pink color. If I do a tranny service will that work ? Please help.

        same thing

on our z28, we have same thing. i don't know about the trans oil color, though. for us it only happens when we downshift from OD to drive to pass a car....it don't shift back to OD till redline even though the shifter is already in OD. dont know if its the 'puter, syncronizer, gears, or what...maybe GM designed em that way???????

That happened to my Z a couple years back......it would not shift out of first at WOT....took it in to the dealer with just under 3K kms left on the extended warranty and found the 1-2 clutch packs were burned up and black...no friction mat'l left. Fresh GMPT rebuild went in the next day.........under warranty too!!

It could be computer related, it could be an internal problem. Take it to a trans shop before you beat on it any further. It could be a simple stuck valve that if you don't fix it now, it may take a few other parts with it. Just so you know, a trans rebuild isn't that expensive as long as there are no broken parts. It's the broken parts that can push the price skyward.
