  • Fuel pump

I have a 97' Firebird WS6 and I'm gonna have to change my fuel pump soon. Will I have to remove the rear axle to get it out? Is there a difference in the car's performance between having a stock pump or an after market one?

No difference in performance, but getting the aftermarket 255 LPH pumps allows you to do more mods without having to worry about having enough flow.

You will have to either pull the right part of the axle down or cut the exhaust off at the axle, because the exhaust has to be removed to get the tank out. The other option is removing the rear carpet and cutting an access hole in the floorpan of your car, but I don't know how to do it, and wouldn't do it to any f-body (personal preference).

ok im in the middle of doin this to my 97 z28. are you ready. i have the panhard rods off. the shocks unbolted and the pass one off. the pass spring off. the pass side of the sway bar disconnected. the rear lowered pretty far. the exhaust disconnected at the Y and twisted so the its pretty much in the fender well.( i couldnt separate the pipes.) the gas tank down, not out. the fuel pump assembly i had to take out while the tank is on there. Oh and the pass wheel is off. Not all easy. but doable. good luck. any questions ask.

          Thanks

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. Lately its just been having a hard time starting due to not having enough fuel pressure. I replaced the fuel filter and that seem to do the trick so far. It has been starting much better. Hopefully I won't have to mess with the pump. Again thanks.

thats the same thing i went through bro. after a couple weeks mine started doing it again. then a few months down the road it started to cut out here and there a little. then it started flat out dieing on me. so i hope it works out for you, but if it doesnt, be prepared. its a job. but you dont want the garage to do it, mine wanted 800 to do it. they said it was 400 for the pump and 400 for labor. i got the pump brand new for 105 and new era. so if you have to and you got questions you know where to come. im going through it right now, and theres tons of guys on this board who know alot.

Thanks Ken. Yea I better take care of it before it starts to die on me. Hey could I just replace the pump or do I have to replace the whole assembly? How's yours going by the way?

                    FUEL PUMP

Well I just got a 97 t/s 6m. I think i need a fuel pump too. When i go to start it it wont start unless i turn the key to the on position 2-3 times. What kind of pump should i get. One other thing, it has a 383 stroker in it. I mean it runs great but just to start it sucks. If i turn it off and go into the store it will start up but if it sits it wont. thanks
