i bought my Z in sept of 03, parked it in the garage and put a new nose and dash on it over the winter. i ran it very little. it ran great when i ran it, and when i drove it to the body shop to have the frame straightened. within a few hundred miles i did an oil change. after the oil change i now have a pretty serious lifter tick/tap. it only exists during the first 5-10 mins after starting. then is gone and un heard. i am currently running 5w30 and a K&N oil filter. what would cause this?

Is the sound definately coming from under the intake. Just a thought, have you checked to see if you have a loose rocker arm?
-
no i havent checked that, would that go away after a while? this just seems like a lifter bleeding down, and eventually it fills back up. after 5 mins of driving it totaly dissapears, i have even pulled over and gotten out and listned to it2000 WS6 T/A M6. The stock GM lifters use a fairly weak retaining ring to hold the lifter piston assembly in the correct position after the lifter has been "pumped up".
Additionally, the oil control oriface is smaller on stock lifters than on most aftermarket lifters, which is why the stock lifter piston assembly is allowed to be "pumped up" at higher rpm's. This is not good as the valves are subsequently held off their seat and your hp will suffer.
Stock lifters will not bleed down as much as aftermarket's at lower rpm's, but this does not rule out that it could be a lifter goin' south.
