  • Florida DMV vs. Muslim woman

Have you all heard that there is a woman in Florida suing the DMV for the ability to take her driver's license photo with her scarf covering her face on the grounds of religious freedom? Sometimes I think I am the only one who gets upset about things like this. The most obvious issue is people think driving is a right -- it is not -- it is a privilege. Privileges can be revoked if you don't follow the rules; rules which in this case require photo identification. There are many other places and times when showing ID is necessary (boarding an airplane, anyone?) and to suggest an alternate form of identification such as fingerprint scanners or retinal scans for all of these places is just ludicrous. How is anyone supposed to IDENTIFY someone who has their face almost completely covered???? Here is the part that really gets to me... EVERY country in the world has their own culture, their own way of life, their own customs and laws. Yet it is only in America where one could be called discriminatory for expecting an immigrant to this nation to assimilate to the culture which they just joined. Why would anyone suggest that WE change for those joing us? I just don't get it. America is a democracy, RULE BY MAJORITY, not EXCEPTIONS FOR ALL MINORITIES. As you can tell, I am getting pretty fired up about this, so I'll close now. All philosophy aside, driving remains a privilege. She can certainly choose not to take off her scarf - her commitment to her beliefs is admirable - but as a consequence, the State of Florida can certainly deny her the privilege of driving, sighting the fact that the safety of everyone in this nation outweighs someone's wishes to drive. How quickly she forgets to be thankful she is in a country where she has the freedom to even consider driving. Just my 2 cents... what's yours?

On the news last night it was reported that Women in HER native country HAVE to take the vails OFF to get a drivers licence or they dont get one!I dont know what gives this Prem Madona the right to make the rules as she goes wasting taxpayers money but if she cant abide by the rules that apply to all of us maby she should go back home.

I watched part of the testimony yesterday... learned that she is a born and raised Christian American. Converted in 99 I believe. My theory is that she is an ultra ultra liberal trying to make a point at everyone's expense.

You are right... it's a privilege to have a driver's license - not a right.

      My 2 cents.

Ultra-ultra conservative? HA! Ultra-ultra conservative Muslim women are submissive. They are walked all over by the men in the society and they are not treated as humans. They certainly have no independence, and most defintely do not drive. What's more, they CERTAINLY do not have the self-confidence to contest a law in the courts.

While I once could at least admire this woman for her conviction, after further contemplation, I can now see how selective she is being with her faith. Apparently conservative Islam is only valid to her when she wants attention.

This gets more interesting by the day.

It's like whats happening with some of the base closures in a couple foreign countries and Purto Rico - We catch flack for being their and using the land, yet when we decide to pull out, they foul. The US Navy caught ALOT of flack for the bombing of the Island of Viegas even though their were safety precausions out the *** (I know I've been down their on the ships doing those excersizes) (plse forgive my spelling), the navy stopped using using the island & since we no longer can bomb their, the navy base is no longer needed - well the same people who were telling the navy to go home are now ing cause shutting the base down which ='s 1200 civilian jobs lost, 700 military leaving and 300 million lost to the local economy. Personally I think it's sad cause it's a nice island & I always enjoyed the 20+ port visits I made their (I stopped counting after around 20 visits). The military is also moving the bases in germany to other countries cause the way the germans have not been supporting us. Germany is REALLY ing over that since they will loose over a billion to their economy.

People need to learn that you can't have it both ways & to be carefull what you wish for.

PS. For our members in Purto Rico, the above is what I got in the news reports & my personal observations during my visits their - In my numours visits I've always had a good time & hold no ill will towards you or ur people PS

I saw Vieques from the bridge of a Navy ship during a gunnery exercise there. Trust me when I say that that place is nothing to write home about.

Also, we had to watch for WMT's. If we saw a WMT we had to stop shooting and wait for it to leave the area. What is a WMT?

It's one of the curses of our freedom that we have to put up with these things occasionally. It's a true Catch-22, darned if you do darned if you don't. Personally, I don't think a DL photo is enough to get too upset about, what with all teh other not-so-nice thigns in the world. Perhaps some day all this racila stuff will just gradually disappear--I hope so.

                Catch 22?

No, I do not think this is a double edged sword where you are wrong either way. EVERY freedom we have is limited by a line of what we deem to be culturally acceptable. Think about - we have freedom of speech, yet we can't cuss on TV. We have the right to bear arms, yet restrictions and controls on guns are everywhere. Even freedom of religion is limited. You could be the most devout Mormon in the world, but if you live in the United States, polygamy is still not allowed.

You may consider a driver's license photo to be a smiple issue. But if you allow this woman to leave her face covered, there is no longer ANY way to legally identify ANY woman in this country since they could all claim to be Muslim and want their face shielded. This is a Pandora's Box that we do not even want to go near. Driver's Licenses are the main form of identification in this country, and until they are replaced by something else, they need to have a photo of you on it -- for the safety of everyone else in this country.

I don't know how accurate the info is, but a local newscaster reported that Florida already has a photo of the woman..... its a "mug" shot, because she is reportedly a convicted felon.....

Worth finding out if the report is true.

Driving is a priviledge, not a right. If you want the priviledge, you follow the rules. Religion, sex, race have nothing to do with it.

                      info

Here is an article with some info regarding the woman in question.

                      http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/sultaana1.html

I wouldn't just go and label her as a liberal. I have been called a liberal every now and then and I don't agree with her. I don't care to choose cause it is a waste of time. Get's back to the "with us or against us", make me choose and I will choose against you.

Should she get her way and have her DL with her pic not on it, absolutly not. It is for the safty of others and it is important. If she doesnt want her picture taken then you don't get your license. It should be that simple.

Driving may be a priviledge...and expensive one to...don't forget at some point it was a personal right that was taken away. We make rules we lose rights. I am not saying it should be anarchy so please don't label me. Just don't take a single woman and use her to represent everyone else that may have a different belief.

I don't see this as a race or religous issue. Someone just trying get something from the system. This country wouldn't be here with out imigration so I am not gonna touch on that.

                        No labels...

I wasn't trying to "label" her. I was just trying to point out the inconsistencies in her actions. If she truly was such a fundamentalist Muslim, driving a car would be the least of concerns. She can't claim fundamental and strict Muslim faith and then say she wants to drive... the two go together like oil and water. That was all I was trying to say.

We may have all been immigrants at one time, but the same can be said for every country in the world... we just happen to be the newest. I am only a 3rd generation American, my grandfather immigrated to the states, was naturalized, and fought in WWII. He learned the language, learned the customs, learned the culture, because he knew he had moved to a new country and had to adjust to their way of life. People who move here and want to keep their native language, and take advantage of all of our freedoms in such ways as this woman is doing (I know she is a citizen, I'm just using her for this particular argument), are "biting the hand that feeds them" so to speak. It seems very ungrateful to me to move in and expect everyone to make exceptions for you under the pretenses of the fact that you now have "freedom" -- something you didn't have before.
