  • 96 Camaro won't start occasionally

Every once in a while (every few months) my Camaro won't start (no click or anything) when I turn the key. I will try starting it a few times and nothing happens. I will then come back 5-10 minutes later and it will start on the first crank. Recently, it has happened 4 times over the last week. Does anyone have any idea as to what might be wrong?

not sure whats wrong, but mine does that every once in a while, if i pump the gas a lil bit while turning the key it starts right up.

      Security light

Next time that happens, look to see if your security light is lit.

May be the "pass-key" which can be by-passed if it persists. Second, it may be the starter getting a "dead" spot.

Thanks for the help. I will definitely look at the pass-key as the possible root of the problem.

Could Very Well be The Pass Key!

Just a few days back, I had the exact same problem! As it turned out, one of the wires which connects from the ignition switch to the connector at the bottom of the steering colum broke. Our electrician at the dealer said that its common in these cars, and requires a new ignition switch cylinder. After purchasing the parts ($55 for new switch and one key) and removing the steering wheel, I realized that I coulda just soldered the wire back together. But I changed it anyways. If cleaning the key doesnt work, then I would look to that next. Dont be surprised if your car leaves you stranded though, it did to me! But make sure the "Security Light" is the one that turns on when you cant start it.

If you have an automatic try shifting it to neutral and starting it I have a friends whos doesn't always start but it does when he shifts to neutral I think its something to do with the sensors in the transmission.

I Had an ignition switch problem in my steering column and it shorted and burned the wire harness up
It had similiar symptoms and really wasnt too hard to change out
I think i was lucky because it very well may have burned the car down too !

                    Just an idea

I have a 96 TA six speed, and mine was having the same kinda problem. Finally it just would not start, even after I waited for a few minutes. It ended up being the clutch switch, that is if you have a manual transmission. I just bypassed it for now. It is a security feature so that you don't start your car while it is in gear. The switch box is right up behind the clutch and all you have to do is unplug the wires going to the box, and stick a paperclip from one side to the other on the plug.

You can place a resistance = to the keys under the dash between ignition and PassKey II controler.

You can have injector/fuel pump cutoff bypassed with reprogram of PCM.

You can bypass the starter cutoff relay under the glove box.

And at times,it still wont start!!!!
