  • A strange one...

I have a strange problem I'm trying to track down (V6 engine, Camaro, S Vin).

Today, for the second time in about 2 months, I've came back to my car after about being inside for about 15 minutes and started it up and it acted like it was going to die. I had to give it gas to keep it going and it finally after about 2 seconds of giving it gas, kicked in on its own.

It reminds me a lot of the old vapor lock problems back in the carbed days... so far, both times it has happened on warm, humid days.

Any ideas? Fuel filter is what comes to mind, but I just changed it about 10,000 miles ago....

If it helps, I've also noticed the SLIGHTEST bit of roughness at idle for about the same time period... nothing severe, but enough to be noticed -- RPM's don't fluctuate (or if they are, I am not noticing it).

    Any tips, oh wise ones?

The IAC valve controls the idle quality, the IAC is directly responsible for metering additional air into the engine when the throttle is closed. When they get gummed or carboned up, you may experience an intermittant rough idle, possible stalling when decelerating for a red light, and a few other intermittant problems. They can be removed and cleaned (hold the pintle downward and keep the electronics up) with o2 sensor safe TB cleaner and re-installed. Sometimes it works, sometimes you have to replace.

Thanks Joe, if we didn't have tornadoes all over the place today I'd go outside and check it out...

Well, the tornadoes went away, so I went outside with my new toy I bought yesterday and did a code scan seeing if anything was stored -- I'm getting the following code in history:

75 EGR number 1 solenoid failure

        Just my luck

I've never done a EGR replacement before... what are we looking at in terms of time and effort? Should I just take it to the local garage?

ALso, could this code be just a symptom of something else I should pay attention to?

        Thanks,
        Rob

EGR stuff is easy. The solenoid is even easier. Most likely a half hour's work.

Thanks again, Joe... I popped the hood and yeah, it is right there staring at me... can't get much easier!

I am just concerned that I am not treating the problem, but merely a symptom... is there any common causes for an EGR solenoid to go south?

From what I'm reading, you replace the entire EGR Digital Valve instead of goofing with individual solenoids....

              Thanks,
              Rob
