  • oil pump going bad? what else would cause this?

i have a 1994 Z-28 with a little over 100k on it. i recently posted that i had a nasty lifter tick when its first started, and it goes away after about 10 mins of runing. this all recently started. yesterday i installed new lifters and push rods. and it didnt change a thing. could it be that the oil pump is going south? and not supplying the oil correctly? or could it be something else entirely?

oil pressure is supprisingly good. i hate to say it because i just spent a day and over $200 on parts, but i am almost leaning towards a crack in the exhaust manifold. tomorrow i am going to split the heat shields off of them and see what they look like.

Could also be piston slap until it warms up then goes away. Factory bores and hones aren't always perfect.

Before you go to all that trouble, can you listen to your manifolds with an automotive stethascope? If you don't have one, they can be picked up at most auto parts stores and they are really cheap. I use mine frequently when trying to pinpoint a problem like you have. The ticking might also be one of your fuel injectors........with a stehascope you can listen to them too.

How well do you maintain your car, in terms of 3,000 per oil change. I've seen some pretty nasty looking oil from people that go 5,000 on every oil change and they all have this same problem...and enevitably the car leaks so the put some crazy oil like 20w 50 in it and it makes the lifter tick worse.
              anyways...thats something to think about.

The Z28 is back under the knife, after the transmission, now its the entire engine....will post pics when all finished.
